Welcome back to Blast Breakdown! In this series we will spotlight one player each week who stood out during this 2020 season and take a deeper dive into their numbers and take a look at some that really stand out. 

Before we get started, we'll go over and define some of the terminology being used in the piece:

Bat Speed- The total speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact, measured in mph. The sweet spot is measured 6 inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration- A measure of how quickly the hitter gets the bat from launch position into the swing plane. This is measured in G-Force (g).

On Plane Efficiency- Measures the percentage of your swing that stays on-plane with the incoming pitch  

Exit Velocity-  The measures the speed of the ball off the bat, measured in miles per hour (mph).

First thing you notice in the 2-way prospect is the strength and advanced physicality in the 2023's 6-foot, 185 lb frame and it translated into his measurables. Servellon's bat speed peaked at 76 MPH while averaging 74 MPH showing consistency in the swing and it translated to his results with a max exit velo of 94mph (87 mph avg.) off live arm BP. From the Blast data this puts him in the pro range for bat speed so we know he is equipped to hit for power.
 Whats even more impressive is how quickly he can accelerate into that plus bat speed. Looking at his Rotational Acceleration he got up to 30 G's with a average of 26.61 G's. This allows him to track the pitch deeper and make late decisions giving him more of an advantage compared to his peers against high spin fastballs and off speed pitches.
The last measurable we are going to look at is the On Plane Efficiency. This tells us the percentage of the swing that stays on-plane with the incoming pitch and according to the Blast data if you average 70% or higher you are equipped to have a higher percentage of making contact. With a 79% On Plane percentage Servellon is well above average and when you put this with his advanced bat speed and rotational acceleration this tells us he is equipped to make consistent hard contact against high level pitching. 

In a Nutshell:

“Eric checks all the prerequisite’s for me when putting a valuation on a player. His Blast data shows he has above average speed. His rotational acceleration metrics show that he accelerates into that bat speed more quickly than others, equipping him to start his swings later, which makes him less vulnerable to off speed pitches. You also can’t forget his On-Plane Eff metrics which show he’s consistently above 70%, enabling him to have a higher percentage to make consistent contact than others. So yes I like Eric a lot. I’m sure he won’t be uncommitted too much longer”
