Class of 2022 Inside the Rankings: Diamonds in the Rough

Each week leading up to the new year, we'll be rolling out Inside the Rankings articles to further highlight the movement around the ‘22 classes in NY and PA. This week’s focus shifts the scope to “Diamonds in the Rough,” prospects with plenty of ceiling and a chance to rise up the rankings.

2022 OF/rhp julian herbert (new rochelle)

The Spin: Smooth and efficient in a high-waisted 6-foot-2, 185lb frame, Herbert has all the makings of a late bloomer with the size and feel to impact the game. Gifted with a confident two-way skillset, the primary outfielder made multiple jumps over the past year with a newfound approach offensively, as quick hands generated minimal swing/miss (24.1 mph hand-speed via Blast Motion). Now, with added seasoning, the New Rochelle product is growing into a natural gap-to-gap power profile, posting multiple 300+ foot batted balls (332 foot peak) and a T89 mph bat-exit velocity at the Preseason All-State Downstate, both personal bests. The athleticism carries over to all sides of the ball, standing out the most defensively with a twitchy first-step (7.13 runner) and high motor that always seems to put him in good position to drive the ball towards the plate. There's legitimate traction on the mound too, with a clean delivery and advanced spin traits on multiple above-average offerings. The FB has flashed up to 85 mph (2288rpms) with separation and depth on a 70-73 mph CB (2432rpms) that possesses strikeout shape.

The Performance: 3/28/21, Preseason All-State Downstate: Pitching | Impressed on the mound with one of the top overall bullpens at the event, commanding three pitches (FB, CB, CH) with good direction and pace down the slope. Recorded three separate personal-bests of a T85 mph FB, T21.9 inches IVB, and a T73 mph CB all while tunneling from the same 5.7 foot release height.
