Each week leading up to the new year, we'll be rolling out Inside the Rankings articles to further highlight the movement around the ‘22 classes in NY and PA. This week’s focus shifts the scope to “Up Next,” the top uncommitted outfield prospect in the state.
2022 OF christian toledo (citius prep)
The Spin: Filled with poise and freakish athleticism at 6-foot-1, 210lbs, Toledo has been a mainstay towards the top of the ‘22 class rankings during his HS career. The powerful right-handed hitter is an obvious middle-of-the-order threat, passing the eye-test with a twitchy, connected swing that matches pitch-plane early while scoring highly in multiple advanced measurable categories. Impressive 6.78 footspeed continues to translate to the box with quick hands (22.8 mph hand-speed) and an accurate barrel (60% sweet spot) yielding plenty of carry to the gaps for extra-bases (351 foot batted ball). There’s been continued optimism that another jump is soon on the way, following a strong performance at the 2020 Northeast Future Games as a member of Team New York and seeing success versus top arms. A natural corner outfielder with ability to handle any of the three positions early at the next level, the Citius Prep product plays with an efficient first-step, maintaining pace through release while creating live arm-strength out of the hand (92 mph). Combining the overall unique skillset and this many known tools available, Toledo has the chance to become a day-one starter at the next level.
The Performance: 7/06/20, New York State Games | One of the top performers of the entire event, Toledo set personal bests in exit velocity (96 mph), AVG exit velocity (86 mph), sweet spot% (60%), and arm strength (92 mph). The righty took a loud round of batting practice, leaving the yard twice to pull with more in the tank.
