First Thoughts: Preseason Downstate Outfielders

Dan Cevette
President, New York

Over a week ago (February 21, 2018) more than 60 players worked out in front of our New York boots-on-the-ground scouting staff. Overall, the talent was exciting to say the very least. Several new names to the system impressed while some veterans to PBR continue to improve and raise their stock. Today we take a look at a few outfield prospects that impressed last February, 21. Let's get started. ** Rankings will be updated next week..

2019

Luke Harder OF / LHP / Liverpool, NY / 2019

At the plate he uses a slightly open stance from a wide base, on the pitch he uses a smooth load back, long stride back to even, Barrel path is smooth and fluid slightly uphill with full extension. Shows the ability to consistently make solid contact. Defensively attacks the ball with an aggressive approach, fields to his glove side, gets his lower half and feet in front of him to make a strong powerful throw towards his target, high 3/4 slot above-average arm strength at 85 mph with carry, exciting Central New York prospect to keep an eye on in the 2019 class.

Elijah Diaz OF / All Hallows, NY / 2019

5-foot-8, 165-pounds from an athletic build, on the day he ran a 7.16 60-yard dash and previously has ran a 7.07 60. At the plate, wide stance with his weight over the center of stance. On the pitch he uses a small stride, direct path to the ball, longer path with some rotation to his finish, exit velocity was 88 mph off a tee and during BP he made loud consistent contact. Defensively, very aggressive to the ball, glove is out in front of his body as he fields, keeps momentum towards target as he releases from a high 3/4 slot, carry on the ball with arm-strength of 83 mph on the day. We look forward to see him this summer.

Justin Sierra OF / Monsignor Scanlan , NY / 2019

He ran a 7.15 60-yard dash on lasers showing off high-end athleticism, definitely lower times in the near future expected.  at the plate he uses a wide set up with a leg lift for timing slight back load on the pitch. Barrel path is direct and level through the Zone with full extension out in front, 86 mph exit velocity off a tee with clear signs of more to come in the future. Defensively, fields a ball out in front, glove open with a quick clean transfer to his high 3/4 slot, all shows carry to the target at 83 mph, very athletic prospect to keep an eye on.

2020

Aidan Curry OF / SS / Fordham Prep, NY / 2020

Standing 6-foot-3, 160-pounds from a slender build that will easily add weight as a physically matures. At the plate he uses a slightly open stance, backload on the pitch striding back to even, slightly long, barrel stays on a slight incline path, repeatable and long, full extension. Exit velocity of 84 mph off of tee. Defensively,  attacks the ball had on aggressive,  he fields the ball in the middle of his body, uses a very active lower half moving towards his target, his arm action is short in the back but very long and fluid in front on extension, the ball flies out of his hand at 84 mph with plenty of carry on his throws, a very exciting 2020 prospect to keep a close eye on especially as the updated rankings are released next week.

Jason Castillo OF / RHP / Salesian , NY / 2020

At the plate he uses a wide base, loose hands with a bat waggle. Short to the ball with a mostly level bat plane through contact, full extension one arm. 80 mph exit velocity off a tee, expect more numbers from the rising sophomore. Defensively, stays behind the ball getting his entire body through his throws, releases from a high 3/4 slot with carry to the plate, 84 mph arm strength from the outfield. On the mound he uses a slower relaxed pace to his delivery belt high knee lifts, arm action is fluid throws from a high 3/4 slot leans slightly to the first base side on finish, fastball peaked at 80 mph. Nice looking prospect to keep a close eye on in the 2020 class in New York.

Eric Yost SS / RHP / Fordham Prep, NY / 2020

At the plate he uses a narrow stance slightly Open, hands relaxed at the shoulder height with a bat waggle. Slight stride back to even on the pitch, no load, direct to the ball on a uphill swing plane, full extension out in front with 83 mph exit velocity, definite signs of more in the tank. Defensively, breaks down as he charges the ball, keeps his body behind his throws maximizing Full Potential from a high 3/4 release 84 mph arm strength with plenty of carry to his target. He also worked out from the middle infield position, showing an active lower half, glove fields away from body, fluid transfer, arm strength of 80 mph across the diamond.  Overall, one of the finer looking prospects in the 2020 class we've seen this February.

Gavin Noriega 1B / OF / Salesian, NY / 2020

At the plate  he uses a slightly open stance strides back to even on the pitch with loose hands up around his back shoulder,  short and compact to the ball with an extremely fluid swing path, generates a ton of easy bat speed 89 mph exit velocity off the tee and expect more to come in the near future, bat really plays. Defensively, stays behind the ball breaking down as it approaches, fields to his glove side, sound transfer, throws from a mid 3/4 slot 79 mph arm strength to his target.
