Game Of The Week Recap: No. 5 Orchard Park Vs. St. Joseph's Collegiate Inst.

Before the snow hit upstate NY, for hopefully the last time, two strong Buffalo-area HS baseball programs battled it out in less-than-favorable conditions. The temperatures may have only read the upper 30's, low-40's but that didn't stop a couple D1 arms from heating up.

St. Joseph's - 2 Orchard Park 1

This was a classic Northeast pitchers-dual where the northern arms had the upper-hand over the cold-bats on both sides of the offense. 38 punch-outs were recorded while only nine hits were given-up in this 13 inning contest. Leading the way for St. Joes was 2016 RHP Will Frank (Canisius commit) who was outstanding over five-innings of work. He surrendered only two-hits while striking out seven Orchard Park hitters mostly with his 86-90 mph fastball and above average power slider. 2016 LHP Anthony Brophy answered the call in relief locking down the Quakers over several strong innings of work, keeping the opposition off balance from his deceptive delivery, 80-mph fastball from a  projectable frame. 2017 RHP Gavin Collura also saw some action on the mound on the cold-day.

For the No. 5 Quakers, 2016 LHP Ben Wereski (Columbia commit) took the mound and was equally as effective going five-shutout innings, only giving up one hit, with 10 strike-outs. Wereski shows above-average stuff with a fastball that ran up to 87 on a cold day from the left-side. Coming to Wereski's aid was 2016 RHP Jacob Lewis (Coppin State commit) who was able to work six strong innings on 87 pitches, allowing one unearned run, one hit, and fanning eight batters from his lean lanky build and low-80's arm.

It was Over WHen
In the top of the 13th inning St. Joes saw 2019 Will Carlone stroke a lead-off single to left-field off the low-80's arm of 2016 RHP Brandon Weber (Orchard Park). After a strike-out, passed ball, intentional-walk, and a fielder's choice putting two runners on base with two outs, the table was set for the timely hitting of OF Jordan Jenneve who slipped a single past 2B to RF scoring Carlone from third for the walk-off celebration.
