Inside the Rankings: February Surprises

Dan Cevette
President, New York

The New York 2019 rankings have been updated and expanded. The sheer amount of player's we personally scouted over the course of 15-days in February created quite the mix-up to the previous 2019 rankings. Today we breakdown player's that really jumped onto or moved up our radar this February.  Full list of the current 2019 NY rankings here.

Before we jump into the player's this February, RHP Roman Dorosh (Sachem East HS), one of the top 2019 arms on Long Island made the most of his first outing of the HS season. Long Island PBR NY contributor and President of Axcess Baseball Vinny Messana saw it like this "Dorosh is 6-foot-1, 180-pounds with a fearless mentality on the mound. He sat 87-88 mph with the fastball while touching 90 once from a low 3/4 slot, naturally creating arm-side run. He also showed a wipe-out slider that he used for his strike-out pitch. He's durable and tenacious". Dorosh will be on full display at the 2018 NYS Games and enters our 2019 rankings at No. 10.

FEBRUARY SURPRISES:

Cregg Scherrer LHP / OF / Skaneateles , NY / 2019

As predicted, Scherrer made a huge jump from last June (FB 82-84) to this February sitting 87-88 mph with the FB that shows natural run and an above average breaking ball. Maybe not a real surprise, but his jump in velocity was significant and he earned his current ranking of No. 5 in a talent rich 2019 class.

Noah Campanelli SS / 2B / McQuaid Jesuit, NY / 2019

Campanelli has been to several PBR events, each time he shows progress in his game. He's a player that has the body-build, work-ethic, and actions defensively that make him an easy to like by recruiters. This February he went to a whole new level. His 60-yard time was increased and so did his range, his arm-strength was above average, and he's still silky smooth with the glove. The only question we have is how does the bat play at a high level. The bat-speed checks the box, and the swing path has rhythm. We will see him June 25-27 at the NYS Games and we could not be happier.

Jack Migliore OF / RHP / Hamburg, NY / 2019

Ranked the No. 22 best player in the 2019 class and he's top 5 when talking athletes, maybe top 3. His measurable stats are silly (6.54 60, 95 exit, 87 arm) and the motor on the field is active and tenacious. He keeps slowly creeping up the rankings and with a big spring/summer we could see that trend continue. He will be on full display at the NYS Games this June 25-27.

Santino Rosso SS / 2B / Victor , NY / 2019

Rosso made a major climb up the updated and expanded rankings moving up nearly 70 spots. He's in argument of top 5 best hands in the class, there's enough arm-strength there and the bat is consistent and fluid form both sides of the plate. Look for Rosso to make a statement come this summer.

Justin Sierra OF / Monsignor Scanlan , NY / 2019

Just starting to scratch the surface on what he could become, Sierra is a natural athlete that impressed Feb. 21. Wiry frame that's ready for an easy 20 pounds of muscle, runs extremely well, defends with confidence and shows an above average arm with carry to the bag. With the bat there is some rhythm and bat-speed present. Will see him June 25-27 at the NYS Games and we think his name will get brought up several times.

Pierce Hendershot OF / 3B / Tioga Central, NY / 2019

Hendershot is no stranger to the prep baseball report and had one of his best showings Feb. 19 in Rochester, NY. He worked out from both the OF and 3B, looking more athletic from the OF with an active lower half, range with his legs and a strong arm that was in the upper 80's. Bat-speed is premium currently but needs to face more consistent pitching to really see what the Tioga standout can do. Will see him June 25-27 at the NYS Games.

Ben Lavery C / 1B / Shenendehowa, NY / 2019

Lavery stormed onto our radar Feb. 22 in Albany and we couldn't be more excited about his future on the field. Premium size, big-time arm from behind the plate, and the bat is strong and fluid. Excited to see him at the NYS Games this June 25-27.

Carter Bach C / 3B / Colonie , NY / 2019

Another large-framed catcher who we think has a chance to really be good. His catch and throw mechanics for a backstop his size are rare and could get better with continued refinement. The bat has strength and the hands are quick, he's another player we are extremely excited to see this June at the NYS Games.

Kyle Rausch OF / 3B / Longwood , NY / 2019

Enters the 2019 rankings at No. 71 and he could keep climbing come this summer. Premium bat-speed from a fluid bat-path, defensively he's aggressive and has a strong arm that has all the signs of more in the tank from the OF position. Long Island prospect that will garner attention at the NYS Games this June.

Jed Boyle RHP / OF / Thomas J. Corcoran, NY / 2019

Great size at 6-foot-3, still lean and undersized for his frame projection. Arm produces a current fastball of 82-84 mph from a back arm-action. He enters the rankings at No. 105 but with a strong showing at the NYS Games expect to see Boyle move up the ranks.
