JUCO Scout Blog: Week 1

Week 1 (Late February - March 15th)

FR. Jonathan Fonseca (Kingsborough CC)RHP / 1B / New Utrecht, NY / 2018

6-foot-4 200 plus pound righty that repeats his delivery; long arm swing with a FB that works with minimal effort in the mid to upper 80’s in his first outing of the spring. Breaking ball works across the zone with 10-to-4 slurvish action and depth. Definite follow as the weather improves and his innings build.

 

 

SO. Bryan De Aza (Sullivan CC)1B / 3B / Cardinal Hayes, NY / 2016

Full framed RHH at 6-foot-3 240 pounds; minimal pre-pitch actions; quiet approach at the dish with ability to drive both gaps with a screaming triple to left center and a well hit double to right-center; middle of the order threat. Lined out to deep left-center in his final AB.

Hit .346 with 6 2B, 2 HR and 18 RBI in 2018.

 

FR. Steven Colon (Sullivan CC)RHP / 3B / James Monroe, NY / 2018

Proportional build at 5-foot-11 185 pounds. Up-tempo pace; long arm swing with life to a mid 80’s FB. Can get it up to 87 MPH on occasion. Sharp, late action CB with depth. Used more to expand then to throw for strikes at Kingsborough CC. 5 IP, 12 K's, 2 BB.

 

 


Joseph Encarnacion (Monroe College)SS / 3B / Middle College , NY / 2017

Lean, athletic 6-foot-2 180 pound RHH with fast twitch actions. Showed range up the middle at 2B with an arm that could work from the left side or outfield. Balanced approach at the plate with a short swing path. Hard GB to SS and RBI single to right center vs. Sullivan CC.

 

 


James Roeschlaub (Cayuga CC)LHP / 1B / Auburn, NY / 2018

Big left hitting 1B. Short powerful stroke. Displayed some pop in the DH against Corning. Will be a main guy for the first year JUCO Cayuga CC.


Colin Noeth (Genesee CCC)RHP / 3B / Byron-Bergen, NY / 2017

Physical, broad shouldered 6-foot-7, 220-pound right-handed pitcher. Arm works long with some effort, showing on the back-side with some effort from a high ¾ slot. FB worked 87-89 mph out of the windup with armside run, out of the stretch sat 84-87, struggled with command, missed up frequently. Slider worked 75-78 with 11/5 shape.

 

 


Alex Whipple (Erie CC)OF / Lakeshore, NY / 2016

Physical, athletic build at 6-foot, 200-pounds, for the LHH. Top of the order type bat, showed the ability to control the barrel and drive the ball, as well as power to the pull-side.Has above-average foot speed given physicality, looks to put pressure on the defense when on-base. Defensively, makes up for speed with a good first step and instinctive reads.  Also off to a quick start hitting .412 (7-for-17) with 2 2B, 2 HR with 8 RBI and 8 runs scored while stealing 6 bases. Last year hit compiled a .366 average with 12 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR and 42 RBI while swiping 28 bags.

 

 


Freshman LHP Pablo Campusano ( Evander Childs / Sullivan CC)
Athletic frame at 6-foot-3 190 pounds. The southpaw saw one inning of work vs. Kingsborough striking out the side in order. Long, fluid arm action that hides the ball well. Flashed one late action CB for backwards K. Sits 82-84, touching 85 MPH. Intriguing follow.

Freshman SS Gionvanni Diaz (Christopher Columbus / Sullivan CC)
Electric in the box at 5-foot-10 195 pounds with a strong lower half; works deep counts but can also ambush a fastball; tripled off the fence at a deep Kingsborough CC park. Went 5-for-7 in doubleheader. Glove plays well but was flat-footed on a few throws. Expect the defense to improve with steady reps outdoors.

Freshman RHP Jordan Kazen (Notre Dame HS, ONT / Sullivan CC)
Broad shouldered, full frame 6-foot-1 265 pounds who fills up the zone at 83-86 MPH. Relied heavily on his FB command while showing only a handful of secondary pitches. Works fast and showed above average FB command to the glove side.


Sophomore OF Walfi Regalado (International HS at Prospect Park / Kingsborough CC)

Athletic, middle of the order bat with a flat swing path. Aggressive, early in the count approach. Arm showed accuracy and average carry during pregame. Collected two hits and 2 stolen bases on the day vs. Sullivan CC. Hit .319 with 2 HR in 2018.

Sophomore Freddy Rojas (James Monroe HS / Monroe College)
6-foot-2 195 pounder who has room for additional physical gains. LHH outfielder who spent his freshman season at Hillsborough CC in Florida hitting .277 with 6 2B, 3 HR and 27 RBI. Strong, accurate arm from RF with a balanced, slightly open setup at the plate.

Freshman 1B/3B Daniel Alfonzo (Bayside HS / Monroe College)
Full framed RHH at 5- foot-10 235 pounds. MLB bloodlines as the son of former NY Met great Edgardo Alfonzo. Off to a quick start hitting over .340 with a couple homeruns in Monroe’s grueling preseason schedule. Easy, natural lift in his swing with a slightly open setup.

Sophomore RHP Brandon Backman (Danbury HS, CT / Monroe College/ St. John’s Commit)
6-foot-4 215 pound power pitcher’s frame. Has notched double digit strikeout totals in 3 starts including 12 over 5 IP vs. defending NJCAA DII National Champions LSU-Eunice. Also punched out 11 vs. Harford CC and 13 vs. Florence Darlington. Appeared in the New York Collegiate League Scout Blog this past summer getting up to 92 MPH. Sat 87-90, touching 91 MPH vs. Sullivan CC. FB command wavered and received some help on chases up in the zone. Long arm swing with with an uptempo pace; will mix some hesitation and double leg lift variations into his delivery. Breaking ball maintained 11-to-5 shape with depth.

 

Sophomore MIF Gustavo Gonzalez (Instituto Ciencias Aplicadas / Monroe College)
Smaller build at 5-foot-6 165 pounds, the RHH hitter from Panama City, Panama sets up in an even stance with a short, compact stroke. Patient approach, drew 2 walks and a hard hit 2 hop single in the 5-6 hole. Active defender with soft hands and quick release with average but accurate arm. Leads Monroe with 7 stolen bases on the year.

Sophomore RHP July Sosa (La Vega Christian School / Monroe College)
Durable build at 6-foot-2 220 pounds. The Bronx, NY native featured an upper 80’s FB that touched 91 MPH vs. Sullivan CC. Over the top arm slot with a devastating 11-5/12-6 CB with late, tight action. Also flashed a slider/cutter hybrid with two tier break. Able to spot and expand with with secondary stuff and racked up 10 punchouts over 4 IP. Impressive outing; has compiled 43 K’s in 25 ⅓ IP including double digit strikeout totals vs. NJCAA DI powers San Jacinto (11 K’s) and Harford CC (10 K’s). Was 5-3 with 81 strikeouts over 56 ⅓ IP in his freshman season at ASA College.

Freshman Rigo Tapia (West 50th Campus / Monroe College)
6-foot-0 200 pound RHP with a strong lower half. Threw spotless 9th striking out the side vs. Sullivan CC. Was 82-84, touching 85 MPH with more in the tank.

Sophomore LHP Nathan Presbot (CENAPEC / Monroe College)
Athletic 5-foot-10 180 pound build for the southpaw from San Pedro de Macoris, D.R. Up tempo pace with a short, quick arm. Struck out 3 in his only inning of work, working around 2 hits and a walk vs. Sullivan CC. Sat 86-87, touching 89 MPH.

Sophomore MIF Victor Torres (James Monroe HS / Corning CC)

Lean, athletic SS. Plays with some juice. Soft hands, shows high IQ. Above average runner on the bases. Had two triples and a couple RBI; table setter type approach.

Sophomore Jeresly Cicila (Trinity Christian Academy, Curacao / Erie CC)
Athletic, wiry build at 6-foot-0 170 pounds for the native of Williemstad, Curacao. The RHH infielder is off to a quick start for the Kats hitting .458 (11-for-24) with 3 3B, 5 RBI and 9 runs scored.
