Mahopac 4 - White Plains 3

Mahopac senior Louie Nardella broke a scoreless tie at White Plains on Wednesday with a three-run double in the top of the fifth, setting up the Indians for a 4-3 win in their season-opener. Nardella came up with two outs and the bases loaded, lacing a 2-1 fastball over the left fielder’s head to clear the bases. In the previous inning, White Plains starter Daniel Lotito had two men on with one out, but came up with back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam.

In the top of the sixth, Mahopac’s No. 9 hitter Joe Fichera had an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0. It seemed insignificant at the time, but turned out to be the difference in the game. Lotito ended up pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out five. He was replaced by freshman right-hander Spencer Lodes, who did not allow a run over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Mahopac starter John Reda kept White Plains off the board through five scoreless innings, but was pulled in the bottom of the sixth after allowing a leadoff single. The senior right-hander allowed three hits and two walks on just 68 pitches. He was replaced by right-hander Cal Lawrence, who loaded the bases and gave up a two-run double to Lotito. Another run scored on Mac Innes’ fielder’s choice to cut White Plains’ deficit to 4-3, but Lawrence ended the inning with a strikeout.

White Plains (0-1) only has two senior starters, and the Tigers’ inexperience showed in the seventh. Andy Iglesias was hit by a pitch to start the inning and easily advanced to second on well-placed sac bunt from Steven Rand, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it to third base. Lawrence retired the next batter to end the game.
