New York Insider: Top Five 2016 Uncommitted Middle Infielders

Dan Cevette
Director, New York

In New York, the 2015 amateur baseball season has started to wind down as more consistent, colder weather blankets the state. For the 2016 graduating class, November 11-18 dates the early signing period where many prospects across the state will ink their NLI (National Letter of Intent). With that said, many college programs are still hard on the 2016 recruiting trail - uncommitted seniors, worry not.

It's all about the Seniors

We are dedicating the next few weeks to the uncommitted 2016 class here in NY. Today we are taking an in-depth look at the top five MIF still available, seen by our staff at top-flight events in 2015. We also discuss a few guys you don't want to sleep on, plus the top measurable stats recorded by each weeks position. ** The Top Five Are In No Specific Order

1. Ryan Simmons

High School: VictorRyan Simmons
Position: SS
Grad Year: 2016
Quick Hit: Simmons might have one of, if not the rawest arm of unsigned defenders across the board. Up to 87 mph he shows signs of that continuing to improve with a clean, easy arm action with late hand-speed. Not a speedster but will impress you with his range and ability to make plays on the run. Still raw at the plate with his hands really staying inside-the-ball, bat-speed is improving. Wouldn't be surprised to see him make the switch to 3B at the next-level.

Stands at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, with an athletic body build.  He ran a 4.70 Home to 1st from the right-hand side.  He has a smooth approach through the ball, with smooth, soft, quick hands, throws with a clean loose action, arm is very strong across the diamond, plays through the ball nicely, with lots of range, and has accuracy on the target.  His arm strength was at 87 MPH.  At the plate his setup is relaxed and very balanced, slightly open, high leg kick stride, with a smooth load.  His hands are very compact and strong, swinging on a level plane with long/full extension through the ball, with an athletic balance throughout the whole swing.  His exit velocity was 89 MPH.   He is a player who shows a lot of potential to progress to the next level in college.

New York Games (July 2015)
Athletically built with a 5-foot-11, 175-pounds frame. Has a clean, loose arm action with great arm strength across the diamond, has potential for rangy ability. Fields ball deep but arm strength and quick release makes him a solid fielder. At the plate setup is balanced and relaxed, path to the ball is compact and strong with a smooth load and short stride to the pitch. Has high finish and keeps the bat level through the hitting zone. Shows great projection as a hitter with more hard work.
