New York Pro Clinic - Showcase: Pitcher Analysis From Dec. 21

Dan Cevette

Director, New York

The December 21st Holiday Pro Clinic-Showcase was a tremendous baseball experience in Rochester, NY.  Nearly 40 players came out to show us their baseball skills including one player who drove nearly six hours from Staten Island, NY. 15 college coaches showed up for this Holiday event making this New York's premier winter clinic-showcase. Some very impressive numbers were recorded, and considering the time of year, and players not being in baseball shape, my staff (including myself) were thoroughly impressed. Here's a deeper look at the Pitchers from Dec. 21st.

+ Maddux Minton, OF/RHP, Livonia HS, NY (2016)

Minton stands an athletic 6-foot-0, 165-pounds. From the mound he uses a side step, high knee lift, hands high, break over the rubber. He drops some on back leg driving hard with momentum towards home. Arm action is deep, a little back towards second, but loose and easy, signs of hand speed. His stride is very long, shoulders stay square, some head tilt towards 1B. He needs to work on his finish being more out in front, with more flexibility. He shows next-level hand speed and projection from the mound.

+ Kenneth Howe, RHP, Mount Morris HS, NY (2016)
Howe stands an impressive 6-foot-4, 185 pounds from the mound. Mechanically he is sound. He uses a back step from the full-windup, high knee lift, hands stay high. He has good forward momentum, long loose arm action, throws from a high-3/4 slot. Front side is strong, stride is long with good direction, finishes over his front knee, has some weight carry which brings him forward. All the signs of above average HS velocity are there. Excited to see him in spring when his arm is fully ready to compete.

+ Ryan Marketell, SS/RHP, Webster Thomas HS, NY (2016)

Marketell stands a lanky 6-foot-5, 165-pounds.  He uses a smooth delivery from the mound, very high knee lift, hands high. Hands break over the rubber, long (back towards 2B) arm action, works free and easy. Throws from a low-3/4 slot, clean arm wip, needs to get over his front knee more, working on his flexibility with aid in that. Great size from the mound, a prospect to keep a eye on this spring.

+ Mike Zimmerman, RHP, Canandaigua Academy HS, NY (2016)
Zimmerman stands 6-foot-0, 165-pounds with good size on the mound, room to grow. He shows a smooth start to his delivery, high leg lift, hands stay high. Stays strong on his back leg, falls towards home. Long back arm action but works quick and clean. Long stride, throw from a high 3/4 slot, release is over front knee out in front, balanced finish. Zimmerman shows solid mechanics with some velocity projection, fun guy to keep an eye on this spring.

+ Brian Linton, SS/RHP, Genesseo HS, NY (2017)

Linton stands 5-foot-11, 155-pounds with a slender build. From the mound he uses a relaxed delivery. He uses a high knee lift with hip turn, great momentum towards home-plate. Hands break in front of rubber, deep-back arm action, level shoulders, opens front side too fast, throws from a mid-3/4 slot. There are clear signs of hand speed from the mound. He finishes with good extension over his front knee. Fun player to keep an eye on.

+ Alec Teska, RHP, Cato-Meridian HS, NY (2017)
Teska stands 5-foot-11, 160-pounds with an athletic build. He uses a side step, quick delivery from the mound. Shoulder tilt down, leans hard towards his target. He uses a long back arm action, throws from a low-3/4 slot, long stride, finish could be more out in front, stands up on the recoil some. Arm works quick, prospect to follow.

+ Mike Donofrio, LHP, Gates-Chili HS, NY (2016)
Donofrio stands 5-foot-9, 190-pounds with a stocky strong lower half. On the mound he uses a calm relaxed delivery, high knee lift, hands stay high over rubber before they break. He has good forward momentum towards home on his drive, some uphill shoulder tilt, shorter-back arm action that works clean. Throws from a high-3/4 slot, finishes very good over his front side.

+ Tim Gaudioso, 3B, Fairport HS, NY (2016)
Gaudioso stands 6-foot-1, 220-pounds with a stocky build. He uses a side step, belt high knee lift, hands high. Short arm action, square shoulders, long stride, throws from a high-3/4 slot, balanced finish. He gets his body through his throw well maximizing his arm strength.

+ Ben Hufland, MIF, Webster Thomas HS, NY (2017)

Hufland stands 5-foot-10, 155-pounds with a slender build. He uses a quiet, clean delivery from the mound. Back step, high knee lift, hands high, break when knee starts going down. His arm action is down - long - clean with slight uphill shoulder tilt. Throws from a high-3/4 slot, long extension, strong finish over front side.

+ Lucas Dorsey, MIF, Brighton HS, NY (2018)

Dorsey stands 5-foot-6, 125-pounds with a slender build. From the mound he starts with his hands high, pitching arm-elbow up. He side steps, high knee lift over the rubber, breaks hands on the drive forward. Fluid arm action, throws from a high-3/4 slot, short stride, upright finish. He needs to work on his flexibility and on finishing more over this front knee, trying for a longer stride.

+ Hector Vargas, OF/LHP, (Webster Thomas HS, NY (2016)

Vargas stands 5-foot-4, 140-pounds with a smaller build. From the mound he uses a fluid tempo during his delivery. He uses a belt high knee lift, some drift in his balance, hands break chest high. Arm action is deep and short, throws from a high-3/4 slot, nice long stride, finish is over front side.
