Preseason Top 25 Preview: No. 23 Olean

Dan Cevette
Director, New York

After weeks of careful consideration, with schools in all classifications on the table including: NYC schools, private and catholic schools, public Class D through AA schools - We finally released our Preseason Power Top 25 Rankings.

Over 900 high schools were eligible for our Power Top 25. An executive team, comprised of 15 members scattered across the state, in conjunction with the NYSSWA was put together to help with all team rankings.

As the season begins our boots-on-the-ground scouting team will be out covering several HS games a week, compiling player and team data, that will be invaluable in accurately shaping this ranking. Today we take a look at our No. 23 ranked team on our poll, Olean.

Team Preview: No. 23 Olean

When you start discussing programs in the state that have a legitimate chance at really making a run, several class AA schools come to mind. And rightfully so, these are the biggest schools (enrollment) the state has to offer, so finding a handful of programs with serious baseball talent doesn't shock me that often. What does shock me however, is how loaded-with-talent the No. 23 Olean Huskies HS program really is - oh and before I forget, they are a small Class B school. Let's take a look at some of the top players for Olean this season.

When you look early at teams that have a fighting-chance to make a "state run" one thing comes to mind - pitching depth - and Olean has plenty of it. Leading the staff is 2016 RHP Evan Threehouse (Radford commit). Ranked No. 11 in the 2016 class, Threehouse brings a projectbale pitchers build (6-foot-2, 175-pounds) with a loose-whip arm-action creating velocity with the fastball ranging 85-88 mph. He uses that same hand-speed to throw a devastating curveball that has next-level depth. He will be a tough guy to beat this spring.

Probably the most athletic player in the league is our next player highlighted from Olean,  2017 RHP/OF Garrett Boldt. Boldt has an above average arm from the mound with a fastball creeping the upper 80's with a bull-dogs mentality. The one-two punch of Threehouse and Boldt is one most HS programs in the state would pray for. He's also a premium OF with long range (6.67 60-time) roaming CF.

And if two mid-80's arms weren't enough for Oleans opponents to handle, here's another arm to pay close attention to, 2017 RHP Bryan Bizzaro.  Already a low-mid 80's guy that's athletic, who is still developing his off-speed pitches. Once he's dialed in look for Bizzaro to lock down opposing lineups.

Having the pleasure of catching this impressive pitching staff is 2017 Catcher Justin Retchless who showed some skills in a recent workout. 5-foot-9, 180-pounds with an athletic build, swings from the left-side with a pure swing.

Others To Watch

+ 2016 3B Zack Ryan (St. John Fisher)
Stands at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, with an athletic body build.  He ran a 4.46 Home to 1st from the right-hand side.  He has a smooth approach through the ball, with smooth, soft, quick hands, throws with an over the top action, with a very strong arm across the diamond, plays through the ball nicely, and has accuracy on the target.  His arm strength was 79 MPH.  At the plate his setup is relaxed and very balanced, short stride, with a back load.  His hands are very compact and strong, swinging with some uphill tilt, with a high finish with extension through the ball.  His exit velocity was 75 MPH.  He is a plus infielder and powerful hitter, with power to all fields, who shows a lot of potential to progress to the next level in college.

+ 2016 SS Jake Cavana
Cavana stands 5-foot-8 165-pounds with an athletic build and the frame to hold more. In the infield he gets to the ball and fields it cleanly in the middle of his stance. His glove is a bit raw, he uses an average transfer, long arm action, from a mid ¾ slot with good arm strength at 83 mph. At the plate he set ups with his feet barely shoulder width apart, on the pitch he uses a back load and long stride, drives his hands to the ball with some extension through contact with his bat path level through the strike zone. His exit velocity was 78 mph off a tee which has likely went up since we last saw him.

+ 2018 RHP/OF Dylan Vincent
Pitching - Vincent stands 5-foot-10 180-pounds and is put together very well. He shows a relaxed setup, hands start by his waist. Delivery is smooth with good rhythm, knee lift by his belt. Drops hard on back side towards home, long loose arm action, throws from a mid-3/4 slot, fastball topping 85 mph down action. Curveball sat 71 with 10/4 shape. Extremely impressed with this freshman, look for him to do some really big things. Defensively - From the outfield he shows an above average arm, plus skillset, runs like a deer evidenced by his 6.87 60 yard dash, and has some power potential signs with the bat. Gets long extension from the left-side, slightly uphill path. Exit velocity up to 83 mph.

+ 2016 MIF Nelson Rivera
Stands at 5-foot-6, 135 pounds, with an athletic body build.  Defensively – In the infield he has a good approach through the ball, with good  hands, throws with a low 3/4 arm action, plays through the ball nicely, with some of range, and has accuracy on the target.  Offensively - At the plate he has a relaxed and balanced stance, short back stride, with a smooth load.  Short path to the ball, short extension, with a high finish through the ball and some bat-speed with an 83 exit velo.

+ 2016 3B Logan O'Connell
Stands at 6-foot-0, 165 pounds, with an athletic body build.  He ran a 4.64 Home to 1st from the right-hand side.   He has a good approach through the ball, with good hands, throws with a short high 3/4 arm action, with some range, and has accuracy on the target.  His arm strength was 73 MPH.  On the mound, he uses a simple side step, balanced delivery, arm action is fairly clean and loose, throws with a high 3/4 arm slot.  During the game, he was able to use all his pitches to keep hitters off balanced.  At the plate his setup is relaxed and balanced stance, short to no stride, with a back load.  His hands are compact and swings on a level plane through the baseball, with a shoulder high finish with extension through the ball.  His exit velocity was 79 MPH.
