Prep Baseball Report

Top Performer Spotlight: 2022 SS/RHP Brandon Peterson (Thomas R Proctor)

Tim Hunter
VP of Operations

It was a historic preseason here in New York with our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff covering 700+ players at showcase events, all February long. The dust has settled and we are now ramping up our efforts in player rankings, scouting reports, and recap articles. While the outcome of the 2020 HS season is on hold, the Prep Baseball Report (NY) will continue to provide unrivaled coverage for the amateur baseball players in the Empire State.

As we continue our follow up of the Preseason Tour, we will be highlighting "Top Performer Spotlights" on players who recently stood-out at our preseason events. Stay tuned with us for the latest information on the 2020 spring season and beyond.

Scouting Report

Physical: 5-foot-11, 178-pounds. Athletic, lean frame. 6.97 runner in the 60; 4.19 home-to-1B.
Offensively: LHH. Tall, relaxed stance with a wide base, hands slightly above shoulders with a level bat, slight bat waggle with a medium leg kick Short bat path, barrel gets to the point of contact quickly, good extension through contact, swing path stays level throughout. Opposite field to up the middle approach. 84 MPH raw exit velocity.
Defensively:  Small hop for timing, consistent footwork on approach, stays low on attack and fields the ball in the middle of the body funneling into the stomach, sure hands. Short arm swing with a low 3/4 slot.  INF - 82 MPH.

Pitching Delivery: Steady pace, fundamental delivery into an easy effort repeatable release; more in the tank.
Arm Action: Long, fluid arm action with high 3/4 release.
FB: T81, 79-80 MPH. Commands low with downhill plane.
CB: 68-69 MPH. 12-6 shape.
CH: 71-73 MPH. Good hand speed with arm side fade.

Standout Skill
The way Peterson was able to flash his glove work, especially when moving up the middle and on the run plays. Very firm and smooth actions that are harder to come by at a young age. His feet get him in a position to field the ball inside glove foot and out front.
Player Projection
Peterson could be a solid dual player as he develops his game. Only going to get bigger and fill out more as well. Has the agility to play up the middle, but could also cover some ground in the OF if need be I'm sure. So the possibility of a utility player is always an option. Shows good velo off the mound and with a little clean up in the arm action/delivery he could add some mph's.

Quick Hit
"Overall, I like what I see. Peterson showed us a lot of tools defensively and even on the mound. I would like to see him a little more loose at the plate though. Meaning, his lower half to me just looks very stiff while his hands and finish are loose. I want the lower half to mimic the upper and be loose throughout the entire swing. Maybe a little more comfortability is what it is."
