Winter Combine Pitchers: Pitchers Analysis From Jan. 2

Dan Cevette

Director, New York

New York's first ever winter pitchers Combine was a major success as we continue to bring PBR to the Empire State with high-level events gaining players maximum exposure. Pitcher's from WNY, and two from the greater Albany area participated in this one-of-a-kind winter event focused on not only baseball skills, but athletic performance tests during the Combine. We saw a pitcher with a 28-inch vertical, one with a 22-foot medicine ball chest throws, and plenty other tests that take a deeper look at each players athletic skill-set. Here's an in-depth look at the mechanical pitching analysis from Jan. 2.

+ Ben Wereski, LHP, Orchard Park HS, NY (2016)
Wereski stands 6-foot-0, 195-pounds with great size, and room for projection. On the mound he starts on the 3B side of the rubber, uses a side step, balanced tempo. He drops and drives hard off back leg, back arm action (towards SS) level shoulders, long stride. Loose free and easy arm with next-level velocity projection. Wereski is a serious prospect to keep an eye on this spring.

+ Dylan Jones, RHP, Averill Park HS, NY (2016)

Jones stands 5-foot-10, 175-pounds and is built very solidly.
From the mound he uses a high knee lift, hands stay high, fast tempo, hands separate over rubber. Drops and drives hard towards home, hip opens up early, shoulders stay level. Arm action is down, back and quick with signs for above average velocity. He uses a long stride, throws from a mid-3/4 slot, long finish. He broke off a few curveballs that shows next-level spin, and bite. He finishes well over his front side. Prospect with a lot of upside, and extreme desire to be great.

+ Jeff Biddle, RHP, Orchard Park HS, (2015)
Biddle stands a very athletic, 6-foot-3, 195-pounds with next level projection. From the mound he uses a side step, tempo is slower-under control. He separates high over the rubber, stays strong on back leg, front hip stays closed. He has long, back arm action towards 2B, still works very loose with velocity projection all day. His shoulders stay level, some separation, front side opens up too early. Throws from a high-3/4 slot with an upright finish, needs to work on getting over his front side. Still unsigned, but any program that believes in their pitching coach should jump at him. Could be very good with some work.

+ Garrett Bailey, RHP, Fort Ann Central, NY (2017)
Bailey stands 6-foot-0, 170-pounds with an athletic frame. From the mound he uses a side step, quick balanced tempo. He drops some on his back leg, drives hard towards home. His arm action is quick and clean with velocity projection. He uses a long stride, level shoulders, throws from a mid-3/4 slot, finish is somewhat upright. Needs to work on finishing more out in front to elevate his game even more. Fun player to watch, excited to see him progress.

+ Dawson Broad, RHP, Orchard Park HS, NY (2016)

Broad stands 5-foot-11, 152-pounds with a lean build. From the mound his setup is upright, on his start he uses a side step. He uses a high knee lift, hands are high on separation, quick tempo. He uses the tall-fall method staying strong on back side, closed hip, level shoulders, uses some shoulder separation. Arm action is back towards 2B, throws from high-3/4 slot, shows signs of a quick hand speed. Needs to work on finishing more over his front knee.

+ Matt Staszak, RHP, Orchard Park HS, NY (2017)
Staszak stands 6-foot-0, 166-pounds with a lean frame. He uses a balanced setup, fast tempo, separates hands in front of rubber. Drives off back side, opens hips early some, arm action is short, down and back. Long stride, throws from an over-the-top slot, shoulders show uphill tilt, finish is upright, falls towards first-base line. Needs to work on getting his chin over his front knee.

+ Mitchell Rosati, RHP, Canisius HS, NY (2017)

Rosati stands 5-foot-11, 150-pounds with a slender athletic build. From the mound he uses a side step, belt high knee lift with good tempo, breaks his hands over the rubber. Stays strong on back side driving towards home, front hip stays closed. He uses a short, clean arm action, shoulders stay level, front side leaks open some. Throws from a high-3/4 slot, finishes his pitches with long extension over his front side. Signs of run and life on his fastball.

+ Peyton Gattie, RHP, West Seneca West, NY (2016)

Gattie stands 6-foot-2, 252-pounds and throws from the right side. On the mound he uses a side step, normal knee lift, hand separation in front of rubber. His tempo is slower, level shoulders towards his target. Arm action is clean, throws from a high-3/4 slot, average stride length. His finish is upright, needs to work on flexibility and getting out in front over his stride foot.

+ Brandon Weber, RHP, Orchard Park HS, NY (2016)

Weber stands 5-foot-10, 134-pounds with a slender build. From the mound he uses a wide setup, crouched over rubber. He uses a belt high knee lift, hip turn over rubber, good pace to his tempo, separates his hands over rubber before driving towards home. He uses the drop and drive method, hip opens slightly early, arm action is straight back. His shoulders stay level with good separation, long stride. Throws from a mid-3/4 slot, long finish over front side.

+ Robert Principe, RHP, St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, NY (2017)
Principe stands 5-foot-10, 155-pounds with a lean build. From the mound he uses a back step, quick, somewhat jerky delivery – but repeats. Hands are high on separation over the rubber, drives forward tall on back leg, and shoulders are level. Hip opens slightly early, long stride, arm action is short, quick hand gets inside head. Throws from a high-3/4 slot, uses a nice long extension, finish over his front side.
