2021 OHSAA Tournament: Division II State Semifinal - No. 2 Badin vs No. 9 Bloom-Carroll

AKRON - It appeared a short outing on the mound was imminent for Bloom-Carroll starting pitcher Logan Moore. But the junior left-hander escaped a first-inning threat by Hamilton Badin and then proceeded to blank the talented Rams for 6.2 innings before Nic Feasel came on to get the final out in a 4-0 victory in the Division II state semifinals on Friday.

The 5-7 southpaw finished with a four-hitter against a Badin squad rated second in the state and loaded with college recruits.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs used the fundamentals of defense, pitching and bunting along with timely hitting to move on to the state championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. versus the winner of Archbishop Hoban and Vermilion.

A three-run second inning proved to be the spark Bloom-Carroll needed to get past a program making its 13th state tournament appearance. A sac bunt from Joe Winters after singles by Joshua Moore and Tyler Parks put runners on second and third before a walk to KJ Benedict filled the bases. After a fielder’s choice out at home, a walk to Evan Dozer made it 1-0 and a balk upped the lead to 2-0. CJ Carmichael then capped off the frame with a run-scoring single to left on a 3-2 pitch.

Carmichael added an RBI single in the fifth and that was more than enough for the number nine rated D-II team in Ohio.

Badin left 11 runners on base, three in the first inning and two each in the fifth, sixth and seventh in closing out the season at 27-6.

Sergio DeCello pounded out a single, double and triple, but there were only two other hits in the game.by the Rams.

Bloom-Carroll also totaled five hits in the contest, but left five fewer runners on base than Badin.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Logan Moore proved too crafty in shutting down a Badin squad that had scored nine or more runs in a game 19 times this season. The Rams hit 13 fly-ball outs in the game, a dozen against Moore, whose velo never touched higher than 71 with his fastball. Moore walked four while fanning two.

KEY TO CONTEST: With the bases juiced and one down in the top of the first, timeout was called so Bloom-Carroll could send DH Joshua Moore to the bullpen to warm up. However, a pitching change was not needed as the other Moore recorded a strikeout and pop foul to the catcher to end the threat. On three other occasions, B-C sent out pitchers to the pen but the 5-7 junior southpaw was more than up to the challenge.

BIG RUN: Although the 28-5 Bulldogs won by four, it was far from comfortable against a lineup loaded like Badin. Hence, when B-C upped the lead from 3-0 to 4-0 in the fifth, it was huge. Pinch-hitter Cannon Tucker - listed in the program at 5-7 but a standout volleyball player who is 6-5 - bounced a double over the fence in left bringing in DeCello to relieve for the Rams. A wild pitch forced the infield in and Carmichael promptly hit a sharp single in the hole between the first and second baseman for the important insurance run.

WHAT’S NEXT?: While Bloom-Carroll, which is now 4-0 in state semifinal games all-time, attempts to win a championship for the second time in eight years, Badin looks ahead to next season with the return of outfielders Landyn Vidourek, Lucas Moore and Brady Imhoff along with junior catcher James Nugent, junior third baseman Cooper Fiehrer and sophomore pitching ace Nik Copenhaver.as head coach Brion Treadway approaches the 200-win total (192-81) at Badin.
