2022 OHSAA Tournament: Regional Preview - Division II

Division II - Canton Regional

• No. 34 Chagrin Falls vs. No. 21 Chardon
• No. 18 Louisville vs No. 8 University School

Region Overview: Chagrin Falls came in as a five seed with 11 losses, but is now at regionals after a 6-4 win over Cloverleaf, which stunned CVCA in the district semifinals. … Fourth-seeded Chardon will be the regional semifinal opponent for Chagrin Falls after scoring 25 runs in the districts. The teams met back in mid-May with Chagrin Falls a 6-5 winner on May 12 and Chardon prevailing 13-5 four days later. … Another five seed at regionals is Louisville, which comes off an impressive showing at districts with a 2-1 win over Salem and 2-0 blanking of  Marlington behind the pitching of Connor Morley. It is the first district title since 2009 for Louisville. Anthony Warner, the son of head coach Brian Warner, had a three-hitter against Salem. … University School will be at regionals for the first time since 1992 after a three-hitter by Evan Shapiro in a 4-1 win over Tallmadge. Freshman Aaron Moss gave University School all the runs it would need with a two-run single in the first. Moss fired a three-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over Medina Buckeye in the district semis.

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach:  We are playing with a lot of confidence right now. I think we are in a good place mentally right now.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: It was a pretty cool experience for our players. We made it last year, but many of the players either didn't play or were role players. This year, there are a lot of new faces and a lot of players who had to step into the spotlight. It was pretty special. 

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: Playing in the regionals is a goal of ours every year. It is extremely tough to get here - no matter what the sport - especially baseball. It's a pretty cool experience to know you are just 1 of 16 teams left and that any of those teams have the ability to win the state championship. 

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: I think there are 4 great teams in our regional. Any of those teams have the ability to get to the final 4 in Akron. I think the team that will get there will be the one that is able to relax and play normal. I also believe that every team has some big time pitching so the team that is able to put some good at bats together and score some runs will be the team that gets out.

#21 Chardon

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: Right now our team is hitting the ball very well. We are producing from top to bottom. Guys are stepping up as leaders and we are playing well as a team. Don't get me wrong, winning is great, but helping these young men become successful adults is more important.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Feels like we cashed a check. Players and coaches have put in a tremendous amount of hours into Chardon Baseball. It is always great to see it pay off.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: What a great opportunity for our ball club. Our last appearance was in 2018 where we lost in the semifinals to a great Canfield team. The 2012 team made it to the finals but fell short to Massillon Perry. Our program expects to be competing at this level and we feel the guys are ready for the venue.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: All of these teams are well coached with great players. It is going to be a dogfight with each team's #1 and #2 on the bump. With that said, it shouldn't be a surprise if the regional winner makes it to the state finals.

Coach: Extremely thankful for the support of the coaching staff, parents, and the Hilltopper community. Our school has had amazing success in and out of the classroom due to a great community.

#18 Louisville

Coach: It was a feeling of excitement that I can’t even explain. It’s really rewarding to see all their hard work and perseverance pay off.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: It was a goal of ours. We approached each game with same mindset, 1 pitch, 1 play, 1 inning at a time. We are excited to continue competing together!

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: Each of these teams are here for a reason. It will be an awesome tournament that could end up with any team on top.

Coach: I just want to see as many fans from community and surrounding areas at Munson stadium supporting these guys. They deserve all support they can get to help them come out on top! I know Leopard Nation will pack the house and bring the energy!!

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: I am very proud of the "team" baseball we are playing right now. No one is trying to be the hero. Each player is doing their job and being there for each other. It is special to see such selfless baseball being played.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Man was it surreal. It honestly still feels like it was a dream. We did not know what exactly to expect after losing an incredible senior class from 2021. We knew had talent, but we also knew we were very young and would need guys to step up. As a staff, we were very confident we would come together, but we were not quite sure what our ceiling would be. The guys have exceeded every expectation we could have had.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: It feels like such an honor and a blessing to be one of the last 16 teams still standing. 192 teams in D2 and they all had goals of being in this spot. Our guys have played with a chip on their shoulder all year, have remained hungry/grounded and I think that will only continue.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: High school baseball in Northeast Ohio is so very good, so it's not surprising to see some familiar faces in our regional. Coaches Warner, Sweeney and Long are legends in our game. They all go about things the right way and are in this for the right reasons. Each of their squads could easily win the regional and represent this area well.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add, feel free to send it. Remember, this is for your players, your coaching staff and your community.
Coach: I am very happy for our men to have reached this point in the season. They deserve the opportunity in front of them. They really have bought in from day one of 2021 when I took over. I was excited to take this job because of the young talent I saw and knew combined with their passion and hunger to play at a high level, that perhaps someday something like this was possible. To see it happen so quickly is a blessing. My staff and I are so lucky to work with a great administration, parents, and players. It makes coming to campus everyday very easy - and a lot of fun!

Division II - Bowling Green Regional

Region Overview: Top-ranked Defiance is back to regionals for the first time since 2016 when the Bulldogs won state for the third time in four years. Defiance rallied past arch-rival Napoleon 4-2 in the district finals behind an 11-strikeout performance from Bradyn Shaw. Jayden Jerger threw a no-hitter in the sectional finals against Rossford. … Tiffin Columbian has scored 27 runs in three tournament wins, highlighted by a three-hit shutout by Carson Mellott, the son of head coach Curt Mellott, in a 12-0 win over Wapakoneta in the district finals. Mellott also threw a four-hitter in the sectionals. … Shawn Parnell, who has scored 11 runs and driven in 12 in the last six games by Hoban, had a two-run inside-the-park homer to break a 4-4 tie in a 6-5 win over Bay Village Bay in the district semis, then was the winning pitcher in the district finals against Norton for last season’s Division II state champion. … Braylon Collier drove in three runs to help Sandusky Perkins past Norwalk 6-2 in the district finals after Nolan Thomas had three RBIs in a 5-1 semifinal win over Shelby.

Coach: Winning the district and getting back to the regionals was something this team has had on their minds all season long after not being there since 2016.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: Anytime you can get to the Sweet Sixteen... It is very special. Now you are two days away from getting to promise land (as we call the State tourney).

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: This regional will be really good just like every regional in the state. I am fairly certain all the top seeds came out of the districts.

Coach: Team Chemistry, offensive and defensive approaches, and pitching have been great.

Coach: It was a definite goal for us. We were excited and hungry to keep moving forward. We have been very blessed the past two years, and know that since last season, the bullseye has been on us. The players played their best on the biggest stage and it showed this past Sunday in Bluffton.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: Humbled and blessed to be a part of such a special group of young men and families. We will continually try and become the best version of ourselves through the game of baseball and being servant leaders. Their passion is to leave a legacy through baseball.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: This regional is LOADED with some of the best teams around. Between the defending state champs in Hoban, Poll Champions and perennial powerhouse Defiance, and league rival Sandusky Perkins, this is a true test to see who can make it to the final weekend.

Coach: Our team has had the most amazing path the past four years and a great deal of adversity to overcome. The leadership of the players and desire to become great men of greater character through this amazing game have been both inspirational and humbling as well.

Coach: It is always big to win a district title and it is something that our guys have been working hard for this whole season. To be one of the final 16 teams still playing in the state is always a great accomplishment for our guys.

Coach: Regionals is always an exciting environment and is a place where we look forward to competing. It's awesome to be playing high school baseball in June and to keep this group together as long as we can!

Coach: We have a really tough group of teams in our region. I think we are set up for some really good baseball this week! Looking forward to competing against some of the best in Ohio.

Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: We have overcame adversity of losing some key players and everybody on the roster has played their 1/9th to get to this point. On any given day 1-9 in the lineup can give us the spark offensively and we are very capable of playing clean fundamental defensive baseball. Our starting pitching has kept us in every game this season with a very tough schedule.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: As it is my first year as head coach at Perkins I know how great this team could be. I have had to coach against this team the previous 3 years and knew the caliber of talent. I knew what our team was capable of and winning a district title was one of our goals. I was excited for the young men and had goosebumps as I remember what that feeling is like at that age. Was excited for the team, excited for my coaching staff that have all put in numerous years with these guys. The parents/fans and future Pirate players that were in attendance and especially happy for former head coach Chris Walton who put in 99% of the work to get this team to this point. It was also a great feeling to see Luke Walton who is one of the best baseball players I have seen at the high school level be able to hoist the trophy after suffering season ending Tommy John surgery, he made a promise to me before I took this job that we would be playing in June and he did everything he could to bring it to fruition.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: It is a culmination of the hard work and dedication put in by the players throughout the year in the classroom, weight room, and between the lines. This location in BG is especially exciting to me as a homecoming. I remember playing little league tournaments at Carter Park, Winning 2 Black Swamp tournaments in high school and having the privilege to put on a BGSU Falcon uniform just down the street at “THE Stell” for 4 years and help bring some MAC titles under legendary coach Danny Schmitz. I am excited that our team will be able to experience the magic that is a regional tournament at the historic Carter Park

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: I think this is one of the most loaded regionals in the state in all divisions this year. Starting with the defending state Champs in Hoban which we all know takes an extremely talented and well coached team to accomplish. One of the most historic baseball programs in Ohio in Defiance and this years Division 2 poll champions who are extremely talented across the board. Certainly last but not least Columbian who won our very tough Sandusky Bay Conference and have several guys going on to play at the next level led by one of the most dominant pitchers in the state this season in Carson Mellott, but complemented by a great group of teammates at all positions and very well coached by Curt and staff. We are excited to be a part of such a great regional.

Division II - Ashville Regional

• No. 12 Washington C.H. vs No. 20 Bishop Hartley

Region Overview: Copper Blackburn threw a two-hitter in a 6-1 victory over top-seeded Indian Valley in the district semifinals and Steubenville went on to blank Meadowbrook 7-0 for the district crown. …. Carter Vandall threw a four-hitter to lead New Philadelphia past West Holmes 2-1 in the district finals while also scoring a run and driving in a run. … Washington Court House scored three first-inning runs and that was it in a 3-0 victory over Sheridan in the district finals. Tanner LeMaster had a five-hit shutout for Court House, which scored in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch to defeat Circleville 2-1 in the district semis. … A six-run fifth inning powered Bishop Hartley past top-seeded Granville 12-5 in the district finals. DuShaun Tucker drove in three runs for Hartley, which trailed 2-1 heading into the fifth. Emmett Gillies had a three-hit shutout in sectionals and a six-hitter in the district semis against Jonathan Alder.

Coach: We are coming together at the right time. We have been really playing good defense behind our great pitching. Through 3 tourney games our pitchers have given up just 8 runs with 5 being earned. Offensively we have been executing to get guys in scoring position then getting some big hits!

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Man, it was surreal. It was a great moment for our program as I don’t think anyone really expected us to there. It was great to see the hard work our guys put in all year long pay off and bring home a district championship.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: It is so exciting to play into June. The goal is always to play into June.  I can’t wait to get back on the field with my guys and see them compete on Thursday Evening.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: They are tough, everyone is tough at this point of the season. We play Steubenville every year in a home and home so there is some familiarity there with Big Red. They will be well coached, as always.

Coach: Shout to the Quaker faithful for making each district game feel like a home game for us. Without the support of the community we would not have made it this far. We can’t wait to see all of the red and black at Indian Valley on Thursday.

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: I like our team chemistry. Our players get along great on and off the field. We've dealt with a lot of injuries and illnesses this year, so a lot of guys have played. Seems like a different player steps up each game.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Extremely excited for the players, especially the seniors. These guys have worked hard since the first day of the season and it's great to see the results of that hard work. It has been 15 years since Washington Court House has won a district championship in baseball, so this accomplishment is something to be proud of and something the players will remember for the rest of their lives.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: We are excited to keep playing. We've accomplished a few of our team goals we set at the beginning of the season (league championship, sectional championship, district championship), but we still have a few more goals within reach. Just have to have a few good practices this week and play our best game next Thursday.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: I honestly don't know too much about them. I know they are all great teams that are playing well right now and we have to play our best to get past them.

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: We are a very tight-knit group who has played hard all season. It seems like every game there is a different player who makes a big play and the team has embraced that. A true team that doesn't care who gets the credit and keeps finding ways to win.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: I was happy for the entire team but especially for the seniors. The talk quickly shifted to regionals and the team has been preparing hard to keep the season going.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: It is great for the kids and for the program. It is always great for the program to get a chance to compete with the best teams in the state. The team is excited to get back out on the field

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: The teams in this regional are all very good teams. There are a lot of good arms and the teams are fundamentally sound. Every game will be a dogfight.

Coach: We are thankful for the support from our parents and the Hartley community all year long. There has been a lot of flexibility required, due to weather, schedule changes, and the seniors have made sure that everyone has kept their focus throughout the entire year.

Division II - Mason Regional

Region Overview: Cayden Heller drove in six runs and Sean Taylor five in helping Taylor to district wins over Waynesville (12-2) and Chaminade-Julienne (8-3). … Nic Copenhaver threw a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Tippecanoe in the district finals for Badin, a state semifinalist a year ago, which blanked Wyoming 5-0 in the district semifinals behind a three-hitter from Ryan Kirkendall. … Buckeye Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally from a 3-0 deficit and then came from behind again in the 10th for a 5-4 victory over Johnstown in the district finals, scoring twice on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch. Buckeye Valley topped Marengo Highland 2-1 on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh. … Eaton has given up just two runs in a tournament run highlighted by a 3-1 victory over Batavia in the district finals.

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: We are doing a much better job of picking up each other when someone makes a mistake. If we commit an error, either our pitcher will come up with a big strikeout or someone in the field will make a play. 

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Was very excited and to be honest wasn’t sure what to expect since we were missing two starters for various reasons. It was great to see the kids step up knowing that we were missing some starters. It was also nice since the last time we were in this same spot in the districts we lost to Chaminade 2-0 in 9 innings.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: Any extra game we get to play is fantastic since this is not a place we get to very often.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: Don’t know much about Deleware Buckeye Valley. I’ve seen Eaton play one time and they looked very solid. Brady Rice pitched for them and he pretty much dominated the game.  We play Hamilton Badin and they have one of the better baseball programs in Ohio. They have a great deal of talent and a great coaching staff. They are a team that could compete in the Division 1 tournament. The great thing about baseball is that anything can happen.

Coach: To be honest I had no idea what to expect this season. After last season coming back with most of our starters I was very excited. Unfortunately this summer one of our pitchers had to have shoulder surgery. Then our leading hitter from last year had to have Tommy John Surgery in October. Next, we had a player at the end of the football season have an illness that no one could figure out what was the issue. So coming into the beginning of the season I wasn’t sure what to expect. All of the kids worked exceptionally hard to do whatever they could to help out. We had three players who didn’t pitch at all last year make huge contributions to our pitching staff this season. We have had ups and downs this season, but the kids have started to play their best at the end of the season.  With a little luck we hope this season can continue.

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: Our team is extremely loose and seem to enjoy practicing, lifting, and being together. We have spent a lot of time on the mental side of things this year and our players have done a tremendous job in this area. 

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: We won a tight 1-0 game against a talented Tipp City Tippecanoe team. Runs were at a premium that day so we felt relieved to get out of there with a win. Our guys were fired up though to bring home another district title.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: It is truly a blessing to be able to practice with our team this week. We are very happy to be able to have meaningful lifts with Coach Cheek and practice as a team. There are so many quality teams in our area and we are truly honored to be one of the four teams in our regional.

#16 Buckeye Valley

Coach: I was speechless. We came back twice. Took 10 innings, but we kept after it.

Coach: We have to play our best baseball to move on. We are taking one game at a time.

Coach: There's a lot of good baseball being played. There are no slouches. This is the best high school baseball being played right now.

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: I really like our leadership from our Seniors, they have created a culture of caring about the success of the team, and not individual statistics. 

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Winning Districts for me was about enjoying the moment with the players, coaches and fans. I understand the time and commitment these players and families have put in for many years, it was worth seeing their excitement.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: Having an opportunity to still be playing  at this time of the year and at regionals is a goal of every high school baseball team at the beginning of the season. I hope we enjoy the moment but understand there are more goals to accomplish and that has been their approach all year.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: The three other teams in our regional have had outstanding years. I know each team has very talented young men and are very well coached. I think each game is going to come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes and can get timely hits.
