Baylor (TN) and Centerville (OH) Battle It Out at IMG National Classic

Doug Freeman
Florida Executive Director

In the second round of games at IMG, I would sit on the Baylor (TN) v Centerville (OH). Baylor featured seven Division 1 recruits, six of which were underclassmen and would come out swinging early. Led by 2021 2B Chris Moore and 2020 C Gehrig Ebel, Baylor would jump out to an early 5-0 lead through three innings. Grayson Linderman would get the start for Baylor and control the game through 3.1 innings. Working mostly 84-87 mph, he has an up-tempo delivery and attacked hitters with the fastball.

Offensively for Baylor, seven of their starting nine recorded a hit. Chris Moore had a pair of hits and has a physical frame that will continue to lean out with maturity. He moves fairly well at second, but the bat is clearly his best tool. Hitting in the leadoff spot, he has a quality approach with above average bat speed and strength. Showed that by hammering the second pitch he saw off the center-field wall for a double, with an exit velocity of 99.1 mph according to Trackman.

While they also had good games, I will break down Danny Corona, Cooper Kinney and Nick Kurtz after another day’s worth of at-bats. As for Gehrig Ebel, he led the team with four RBI’s on two hits. While he had a few mistakes behind the plate, he shows mostly solid defensive actions, especially blocking. Offensively, he is stocky with present strength.

Centerville did not go quietly though and would begin chipping back in fourth and fifth, eventually tying the game in the sixth with a three- run sixth inning. Their offensively was led by 2019 CIncinnati recruit Morgan Colopy, whose only out was a 104 mph lineout in his first at-bat. He would proceed to go 1-2 with a single, a pair of RBIs and three walks. A physical outfielder with a lot of strength throughout the frame. Played center, but profiles as a corner outfielder with above average power.

Centerville would eventually walk it off thanks to a Drew Smith groundout, that Baylor would attempt a double play, but fail to get Smith at first and letting Colopy cross the plate for the winning run.
