Best of the Rest 2016 Prospects from the Pre-Season Underclass II

Earlier, we highlighted the Top Prospects from the Class of 2016 at the Preseason Underclass II in Cincinnati, Ohio. Below, we recap the best of the rest from the event. In the coming day, we will review the Class of 2016.

Brian Corbett, 3B/1B, Miamisburg HS

6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect with solid, athletic frame. Offensively, he starts in a crouch with a wide base. Shows rotational mechanics with his lower half. Doesn’t use much of an upper half load. Takes slight uphill path to the ball from shoulder trigger. Defenisvely, he is a corner infield type. Needs to improve lower half and fluidity of his footwork. Tends to open early when throwing early. Needs to better use lower half to improve 66 mph velocity across the infield.

Jake Clausing, 3B/OF, Carlisle HS

5-foot-10, 165-pound corner type player who shows good hands and throws from all angles (71 mph) from infield. Accepts ball well from outfield with 75 mph arm strength. Ran a 4.77 home to first time from the right side. Uses squared hitting stance and triggers hands from shoulder. Has some flatness in bat path (70 mph exit velo).

Jake Dennis, 1B/LHP, Licking Valley HS

5-foot-10, 175-pound two-way prospect. Ran 4.93 home to first time from the left side. Shows good actions around the bag defensively with 75 mph arm strength. Hits with open stance. Has chest level hand trigger and flat plane bat path (70 mph exit velo). Upper body type. Needs to enhance lower body torque. Has good bat finish. As a pitcher, has high front knee kick with moderate 3/4 slot arm speed. Fastball ranges 73-75 mph Some feel for off-speed, curveball was 62 mph while change marked 65-66 mph.

Jake Vance, C/3B, Fairfield HS

5-foot-6, 147-pound prospect. Player who currently projects better defensively as corner infielder. Has good hands and accurate throws. Does need improved balance and arm strength (68 mph), which can come with physical maturity. Ran solid 4.38 home to first from right side. Catching wise, accepts ball well, needs to improve footwork and glove to hand exchange (2.35 pop; 69 mph arm strength). Has open hitting stance with width. Upper body type who does trigger hands from shoulder. Has some upper cut (79 mph exit velocity). Squares barrel well. Needs to enhance lower body torque.

Jordan Peck, RHP, Troy HS

6-foot-2, 150-pound lanky right-handed pitcher. Needs to improve balance and lower half torque in delivery. Moderate upper 3/4 arm speed. Has tendency to "cut off" follow through. Fastball ranges 75-76 mph with slurvy type tilt on curve at 60-61 mph. Changeup registered 62-66 mph.

Mason Groves, IF, Olentangy Liberty HS

5-foot-9, 138-pound infielder with smallish build. Showed quick arm action and transfer in the field. Projects best as a second baseman at present. Needs to continue improving footwork. Tends to get wide and doesn’t play through the ball. Right-handed hitter with wide base. Hands drift in load and have tendency to bar, which creates some length in his swing. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Contact type hitter at this stage.

Patrick Mullinger, C, Moeller HS

5-foot-10, 165-pound catching prospect. Best is his best tool at present. Right hand hitter that starts with a squared stance and front side leg kick set-up. Has low hand trigger with some upper cut (81 mph exit velo). Gets good lower body torque but needs to improve hand swing finish. Ran 4.51 home to first time. Defensively, accepts well but needs work on balance and glove to hand exchange (2.4 pop). Registered 69 arm strength from the crouch.

Tyler Wilson, OF/C, West Carrollton HS

6-foot, 180-pound prospect with solid build. Uses short, over the top arm action from the crouch. Reached top velocity of 64 mph from the crouch and 67 mph from the outfield. Needs to improve quickness of transfer and correct directional issues with his footwork. In the outfield, he needs to play through the baseball and develop crow hop. At the plate, he uses a tall, upright stance. Takes level path to the ball from shoulder trigger. Power will improve with better use of his lower half.
