Division II Team Of The Week: Week 6 - Washington Court House

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE - Strong pitching has not only resulted in eight shutouts thus far but has also catapulted Washington Court House to a Frontier Athletic Conference outright title.

A 9-1 victory over East Clinton followed up wins over McClain (3-1), Jackson (5-2) and Miami Trace (1-0) for the Prep Baseball Report Division II Team of the Week.

“We had high expectations coming into the season due to the number of players returning with varsity experience and the pitching we had returning,” related head coach Mark Schwartz. “Pitching has definitely stood out this year. It’s been a team effort offensively with different guys stepping up and getting a big hit for us when we needed it throughout the season.”

A team ERA of 0.675 has helped the Blue Lions to a 17-1 record, with senior Tanner Lemaster currently with a 5-0 mark. Lemaster, a 6-6 235-pound Kentucky football commit at tight end, has not permitted an earned run in 27 innings, striking out 44.

Senior Titus Lotz stands 4-1 with a 0.90 ERA, fanning 43 in 23.1 frames while sophomore Will Miller is 4-0 with a 0.685 ERA, recording 49 Ks in 30.2 innings. Lotz, the second-rated senior left-handed pitcher in Ohio, is a Bowling Green commit.

Lake Erie College commit A.J. Dallmayer, the 18th-ranked senior right-handed pitcher in the state, is another standout on the staff as well as bringing production at the plate.

“Our defense has been really good this year,” noted Schwartz. “We've also had younger players step up offensively and get big hits when we needed it.”

John Wall tops Washington Court House with a .510 batting average, .600 OBP, 25 hits, 19 RBIs and 27 runs scored. The junior shortstop has had plenty of help offensively from senior catcher Jonah Watters and Lotz. Waters is hitting . 408 with a .516 OBP, 20 hits and 18 RBIs while Lotz, who plays first base when not pitching, has been walked 24 times, scoring 20 runs and driving in 18 with a pair of home runs. Lotz carries a .341 batting average with a .571 on-base percentage.

“We need to continue to get solid pitching on a nightly basis and play great defense,” explained Schwartz, whose Blue Lions extended their winning streak to 17 in a row with a 5-3 victory over Teays Valley on Monday to move to 18-1. “We need to continue improving our plate approach as we will see quality pitching on a nightly basis in the tournament.”

Lynchburg Clay, Monroe and Eastern Brown are on the remaining schedule this week for the fourth-rated D-II team in Ohio, which is ranked 14th in the PBR Power 25.
