Division III Team Of The Week: Week 2 - Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH - With six returning starters including three of the top four pitchers back from an 18-7 squad a year ago, hopes were high at Portsmouth entering this season.

A 3-0 week to open up play in the Ohio Valley Conference has the Trojans living up to those expectations in a 5-0 start to the 2023 campaign for the Prep Baseball Report Division III Team of the Week.

“We had some great pitching performances,” head coach Aaron Duncan said in looking back at last week’s action.

Senior Vinnie Lonardo improved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of complete games, striking out 25 in the process. Junior Deandre Berry added a 12-K outing in helping Portsmouth to a perfect week that included an 8-3 win over Rock Hill, a 7-3 triumph over South Point and a 7-4 victory over Gallia Academy.

Tyler Duncan, who is hitting .570 on the season, had seven hits on the week while Nate Berry and JT Williams were also big contributors with the bat, including a three-hit game by Williams against Rock Hill for Portsmouth, which comes in ranked eighth in the most recent PBR Division III ratings.

“We can still hit better than what we’ve produced so far,” pointed out Duncan, whose team suffered its first loss of the season on Monday to Ironton. “I’m looking forward to putting it all together.”

The Portsmouth head coach believes there are two areas of the game that will be vital against a schedule ahead that includes a game with Fairland on Friday and Wheelersburg Saturday.

“Execution of small ball and continued quality pitching performances,” Duncan said about the keys to making a good season even better this year.
