Division III Team Of The Week: Week 6 - Milan Edison

MILAN - Despite graduating 10 players from the 2022 squad, Milan Edison continues to roll.

Now riding a 12-game winning streak, the Chargers are the Prep Baseball Report Division III Team of the Week.

“We graduated 10 seniors from last year’s team, but we also had quite a few letter winners returning,” explained head coach Sean Hoover. “There is a lot of talent in our younger grades, so we were optimistic we could have another great season if these young players were able to adapt to playing games at the varsity level quickly.”

Mission accomplished so far with a 15-3 record following Monday’s 10-0 win over Norwalk. Last week Edison mercy-ruled Margaretta 12-1 in its lone contest behind the three-hit pitching of Ben Bates, who struck out five in the five-inning game.

“His last two outings have been his best of the season,” pointed out Hoover about the 61st-rated senior right-handed pitcher in Ohio, an Adrian College commit who is 5-1 with a 1.40 ERA, fanning 68 in 40 innings.

A pair of southpaws have also made major contributions on the mound with junior Blake Simon 4-1 with a 0.68 ERA, striking out 34 in 31 innings, and freshman Bryson Wittmer 3-0 with a 0.51 ERA, recording 24 Ks in 13.2 frames. Wittmer, the ninth-rated 2026 left-handed pitcher in the nation, is a Louisville commit.

Aidan Drake, a junior right-hander, is also 2-0 with a 0.72 ERA, recording 23 Ks in 19.1 innings.

“We must limit the free base runners for our opponents,” Hoover said in analyzing what his team must do to continue the success it has had to date. “Lowering our walks and errors is a key for us. We have a very good pitching staff, so if we can throw strikes and field the ball behind them, we will have a good chance in just about any game.”

A strong offensive attack is a big reason why Edison is in first place in the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division with one game remaining, May 18 against Port Clinton.

“We have hit the ball very well up and down the lineup all season,” related Hoover. “We had many players who had not faced much, or any, varsity pitching coming into the season and those players have done a great job in our lineup.”

Junior Carson Smith had a big three-run double with two outs in the second inning to break open this past week’s win over Margaretta with Marcus Medina adding a two-run two-bagger in the frame. Senior third baseman Hayden Fry capped the day with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Medina, a junior second baseman, and catcher Dominic Dymond are both hitting .370 on the season. Dymond, a John Carroll commit ranked 33rd among senior catchers in Ohio, has eight doubles and 21 RBIs and Medina two doubles and 13 RBIs.

Senior shortstop Clint Finnen leads the Chargers with a .433 batting average, producing four doubles, three triples and 14 RBIs with a .526 on-base percentage.

Senior first baseman Max Hoover is hitting .362 with a .516 OBP, Smith is batting .359 with 19 RBIs, and Fry .357 with seven doubles for the fourth-rated D-III team in Ohio.

Games this week with Bellevue and Vermilion are on tap with the Chargers, the top-seeded team in the district, opening sectional play on May 19 at 5 p.m. at home against the winner of Northwood and Woodmore.
