Division IV Team Of The Week: Week 4 - Hillsdale

JEROMESVILLE - Three double-digit wins has Jeromesville Hillsdale now riding a seven-game winning streak and standing at 11-2 on the season.

It also makes the Falcons the Prep Baseball Report Division IV Team of the Week.

“We had seven returners and want to compete for a league title and make another tourney run,” head coach Jason Snow said about the expectations this year coming off a season that ended with a 9-8 loss to Tiffin Calvert in the regional finals. “So far we are progressing offensively, but we want to be more consistent. Our pitchers are competing and we’re playing solid defense, making all the routine plays.”

It has the Hillsdale mentor looking forward to what lies ahead for the sixth-rated Division IV team in the state.

“Our guys are working hard every day,” noted Snow, whose Falcons have two games with Dalton along with contests versus Plymouth and Chippewa on tap this week. “We have some huge games in the next few weeks and we will put everything we have into performing at our best.”

This past week Hillsdale dominated Rittman 10-0 and 14-2 before blanking Chippewa 10-0.

“Our composure and our improvement offensively has been a little surprising,” Snow said. “The guys are focused and keep getting better.”

Nick Kandel tossed a four-hit shutout with 10 Ks against Rittman while Jack Ficks threw a two-hit shutout versus Chippewa. Jake Hoverstock allowed one earned run with five strikeouts in a five-inning game two win over Rittman.

Kandel and Jax Rogers were both 3-3 in the 10-0 win against Rittman, Kandel with two RBIs and Rogers three runs scored. Kandel was also 3-3 while driving in three runs in the second Rittman game with Braylen Jarvis 2-4 with four RBIs. Fickes was 2-4 with a home run and three RBIs in the Chippewa victory with Rogers and Jarvis adding a pair of runs batted in apiece.

Kandel, a Lake Erie commit rated 19th in Ohio among 2023 southpaw pitchers, is now 2-0 with a 1.05 ERA, striking out 34 in 20 innings. At the plate, the left-handed hitting Kandel is batting .457 with 17 RBIs.

Rogers tops Hillsdale in batting average at .528 to go along with 12 RBIs. Hoverstock has a .455 average with a team-best 22 runs scored while Daniel Painter, an Ashland commit ranked 36th among senior catchers in the state, is hitting .444 with 18 RBIs. Jarvis, a junior, has also driven home 18.

“Our pitching depth must hold up and we must continue our solid defense,” Snow said about the keys to making another tournament run.
