HAMILTON - While the recruiting process was thought out thoroughly, Spencer Giesting knew where his desire to play baseball at the next level would take him.

“I’ve always wanted to go south since I was a kid,” the Hamilton Badin junior said. “Once I knew I had the ability to play college baseball, going south is something that I wanted to do. I’m not worried about being too far from my parents.”

An initial visit to Charlotte was more than enough to know his feelings. A second trip to the North Carolina school ended in a commitment.

“When I went on my first visit I fell in love with the campus and the coaches,” Giesting reflected. “Everything about it I loved. I wasn’t worried about how it looked, but was I going to develop? Was I going to like it there? The facilities are just a bonus.”

That visit came in October, with Giesting watching a football game while also conversing with Charlotte alumni. Trip number two took place in April.

“That’s when they offered,” the top-ranked left-handed pitcher in Ohio’s 2020 class noted. “They wanted to get me on campus to do that. My dad didn’t go on the first visit and I wanted him to see the campus.”

Other schools showed an interest during his recruitment, but the 6-3 185-pounder was sold on Charlotte over the likes of North Alabama, Miami, Campbell and Indiana.

“I kept comparing them to Charlotte,” Giesting admitted. “My grandparents and my whole family all play a huge role in my life and they played a big role in my decision. They said wherever I go, they’ll find a way to come watch.”

The second look at Charlotte not only sealed the deal for Giesting, but also brought approval from his father.

“My dad loved it,” Giesting noted. “He’s not one to show emotion about it, but when I told him that’s where I wanted to go, he said it would be a great place for me to end up.”

Charlotte saw Giesting pitch in between the two visits made down south by the Badin junior.

“On my first visit they said they wanted to see me with more consistency,” the 32nd-rated 2020 in the state pointed out. “They said they wanted to see me a couple more times. I knew if I had the chance at another opportunity for them to see me, I’d show them how I’ve improved.”

That came at the start of the 2019 Badin season.
