Andrew Juelg, LHP, Moeller HS, Class of 2016

PBR: Why did you choose Coastal Carolina?

Juelg:  As I've thought about college and baseball, I've always dreamed of going south.  Coastal Carolina has been on the top of my list for a long time and I feel like it is a perfect fit for me.  I'm going to major in marine biology, so even without baseball - I was looking at schools that had this major if I could make it all work out.  Coastal Carolina has a great marine biology program and being able to play baseball at Coastal is the icing on the cake.  They have a phenomenal program and I am excited to be a part of it and contribute in any way I can.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Juelg: A couple of other schools I was considering were IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and FIT (Florida Institute of Technology).  Coach Ditch and Coach Tecklenburg run a great program at IUP - I really liked their philosophy. Coaches Berkemeier and Mercurio at Florida Tech have a very competitive program that I also really liked.  All of the coaches at both schools were extremely patient with me as I worked through making such a big decision, and I really appreciated that.

PBR: How much did playing down south play a part in your decision?

Juelg:  Being from the north, playing south is a huge dream for most of my teammates in Ohio!  There's good baseball pretty much everywhere - but the south is legendary for really great, competitive baseball.  Competitive baseball plus majoring in marine science really lead me to search out schools along the coast and in the south.  It's also is nice to think, in January & February,  I will be practicing baseball outside, while Ohio will be cold and probably still have snow!

PBR: How does it feel to be a part of a Division1 baseball program?

Juelg:  Really, to be offered a spot on any team at the college level is a true honor.  In my search, I visited Division 1, 2 and 3 schools to understand different baseball programs and the sizes and locations of the schools - and narrowed it down to what I thought would be a good fit for me athletically and academically.  To be part of a Division 1 baseball program is a true honor, and I am humbled that Coach Thomas thought that I have what it takes to contribute to the Coastal program.  To any young baseball players out there that want to play at the college level - it takes a lot of hard work and discipline to play at any college division level.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this summer?

Juelg: I played for the Cincy Flames for 8 years and this last summer played for the Midland Braves.  Both programs are great organizations and offered me the opportunity to improve my skills as well as the chance to play in different cities.  The most memorable experience this past summer would have to be the trip to McKinney, Texas to play in the Mickey Mantle World Series.  We had a lot of fun - starting with the charter bus ride down to Texas where we all stayed up the entire night excited for the game the next day - and despite not getting much sleep - we won that first game!  The games were all very competitive and one of our games was played on a field next to the team from Puerto Rico and several of us were able to renew friendships from when we played in the Pee Wee Reese World Series in Puerto Rico at 10U, 11U and 12U!  We had a great time cheering them on!

PBR:  What person has the greatest impact on your baseball career and why?

Juelg:  It's hard to name just one person.  First of all I have had 2 coaches that have had a big impact on me - Coach Brian Conley and Greg Stacy.  I have played for Coach Brian since I was 8 years old - and he has always been there pushing me to do my best and I've always looked up to him to help me improve.  Coach Greg has always been in my corner as one of my biggest cheerleaders wanting only the best for me.  Finally, I have to thank my Dad.  He helped coach my team until 14U and has always been at every game, ready to take me to the cages to hit, or to throw whenever I've wanted. He's the one that's always looked out for me - making sure I became involved with the best programs, getting me help when I've needed it and sacrificed a lot of his time to be with me and baseball.

PBR:  Who is the best hitter that you have ever faced?

Juelg: The best hitters I have ever faced would have to be Eric Connor and Josh Hollander - both Moeller teammates last year.  It's a little intimidating to face Eric when one time I faced him in practice - he hit a line drive that had an exit velo of 107 mph and went 315 feet!  Josh Hollander is an amazing hitter as well - he seems to be able to hit anything you throw at him!
