Zach Maxey RHP / SS / St. Edward, OH / 2020

AVON - As the second-rated uncommitted senior in the state, Zach Maxey continues to play the waiting game.

“I had kind of made up my mind to be a preferred walk-on to Wake Forest but after thinking it over I’m going to see what happens in the spring,” Maxey explained.

PBR Ohio Director of Scouting Jordan Chiero believes the hard-throwing right-handed pitcher has the talent to succeed at the next level.

“He’s a late-bloomer,” Chiero said of the 37th-ranked 2020 in Ohio, whose father Tim has worked as strength and conditioning coordinator in the major leagues. “He has D-I talent and a high ceiling.”

A strong performance at the Top Prospect Games back in June put Maxey on the radar of college coaches.

“There were no schools talking to me before PBR,” the St. Edward senior said. “After that, my phone blew up.”

He attended camps at Penn State, Xavier and Notre Dame in the fall with advice received and taken.

“They all liked how I threw but they all wanted me to add weight,” noted Maxey, who was 6-3 165 pounds when he topped out at 88 at the Top Prospect Games. “I’ve put on weight since then and once I start bullpens again we’ll see what happens. I now weigh 185 and I’m hoping to get to 190 by the time high school starts.”

Added size is just one area the 16th-rated senior RHP in the state has been working on.

“I didn’t have the best mechanics,” admitted Maxey. “I had a curve/slider, I’m not sure what it was … but I’ve worked on my mechanics, I’ve put on weight and I’m developing a curve.
