Ohio Spotlight Game: #13 Walsh Jesuit vs #29 Strongsville

Strongsville won a tight game between traditional powers in Northeast Ohio big school competition, 2-1.

The well played game came down to two consecutive big plays in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and left fielder Alex Gray on first base after a walk.

Gray stole second base on a bang/bang throw and tag by senior catcher Mac Shinaberry and junior shortstop Brendan Regan, who thought the play was in time.  Gray was ruled safe and the very next pitch was driven down the left field line for a game-winning double by senior shortstop Sami Mehmed

Walsh jumped ahead in the top of the third inning, when Regan lined a one-out pitch off the left field would pole for a 1-0 lead.

Strongsville came right back when senior first baseman Ryan Robertson doubled to left field with two outs, followed by a long double to the gap by junior DH Parker Shannon, scoring Robertson to tie the game.

The scoring stayed tied until the seventh as Walsh senior right-hander Dan Mendenhall and Strongsville junior left-hander Jaret Beechy controlled the game thereafter.

Mehmed single in the seventh was Strongsville’s first hit since the third inning.

Walsh's Mendenhall took the tough loss; going 6 2/3 innings, giving up six hits, walking two, while striking out two.

Strongsville's Beechy got no decision after six strong innings of four hit ball, walking three and striking out one. Colin McManamon got the win after throwing a hitless seventh for Strongsville.
