Ohio Spotlight Game: #19 Hilliard Darby vs Mount Vernon

Dublin, OH – Hilliard Darby overcame a two run deficit to beat Mount Vernon in a District Semifinal game by a score of 8-2.

The top seed Panthers sent Luke Miller (Walsh commit) to the mound and the Yellow Jackets countered with Bryant Shellenbarger (Lincoln Trail commit).

What looked to be like a pitcher’s duel after two scoreless innings, Mt. Vernon took a 2-0 lead when Austin Springer walked and Tim Zeller doubled. Both would later come around to score on a fielder’s choice and a passed ball strikeout.

With Shellenbarger cruising through the first three frames allowing only one hit. It looked as if the Panthers would be the victim of an upset.

However, in the bottom half of the fourth the Yellow Jackets and Shellenbarger lost control. The Panther offense would explode for a total of eight runs. Darby would capitalize on two walks and three hit batters. The inning was highlighted by a RBI single by Justin Fugitt and a three run double by Corey Brooks.

With an 8-2 advantage, the right-handed Miller would settle and through the fifth and sixth innings.

Mount Vernon would try to make it interesting by loading the bases in the top of the seventh. But, senior Nate Skelskey would come in relief to record the last out of the game.

Hilliard upped their record to 23-6 will face off with #32 Olentangy in a District Final matchup on Thursday in Newark.
