Ohio Spotlight Games: #21 Lakewood St. Edward vs #29 Strongsville

The St. Edward Eagles and the Strongsville Mustangs squared off in what may be a preview of a huge district match-up in a few weeks. Strongsville prevailed in a hard fought 5-4 win.

Strongsville got it going with two outs in the bottom of the first inning as senior first baseman, Ryan Robertson singled over the shortstops head and junior DH Parker Shannon followed with a walk to put two on.

Senior rightfielder Nico Ramicone then drove a long double over the centerfielder’s head to score the games first two runs.

St. Edward fought right back as as junior rightfielder Jake Lozinski reached on a throwing error and senior left fielder Kurt Farley follow with a single up the middle.

Junior DH Jeff Santa collected two RBI with a double to left, followed by sophomore catcher Mark Mohnicky’s RBI double off the right field fence.

Strongsville junior pitcher Louis Rahm was able to stop the damage right there as he got the last two batters of the inning.

The Mustangs responded in the bottom of the inning with as big hard throwing junior right hander, Kevin Finzer experienced some control problems, walking the first three batters of the inning.

Senior shortstop Sami Mehmed drove in a run with a single in the hole between short and third, followed by another hit by Robertson one out later to drive in another run.

Finzer then righted the ship getting a ground ball double play to senior second baseman Evan Kayser, who made a nice tag and throw play to end the inning.

The Eagles tied the score the very next half inning as Kayser led off with a double in the left-center gap. Lozinski then got a big two-out RBI single to tie the game again.

Strongsville got the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning as junior catcher Noah Trizzino drove a double in the gap, moved to third on a groundout to first base and scored on Mehmed’s line drive sacrifice fly to left.

The rest of the game was about the relievers of both squads.

Eagle senior Ryan Ashdown went the final two innings without giving up a hit or walk, while Mustang junior left-hander went three perfect innings, striking out four batters in the process, preserving the 5-4 victory.
