PBR Spotlight Game: Georgetown vs. No. 13 Maderia in Sectional Matchup

By Matt Wallisa

Georgetown High School faced a daunting task as they visited No. 13 Maderia, the top in the Division III Cincinnati District, on Monday evening.

The pitching matchup paired Maderia senior Griffin Tate against Georgetown senior Taylor Caudill.

Madeira struck early in the bottom of the first as lead off hitter Andrew Benintendi (Arkansas recruit) reached base by error. Sophomore Josh Lowndes followed with a bunt that allowed Benintendi to get all the way to third.

Sophomore Jake Schweppe hit a double to score Benintendi and put Maderia on the scoreboard. Junior Daniel Jacobs quickly followed with a single that plated Schweppe and moved the score to 2-0.

Caudill later walked junior Timmy James to make it first and second. Back to back pass balls from Georgetown allowed the runner from second to score to make the score 3-0 Madeira at the end of the first inning.

In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Madeira struck again with four more runs.

Sophomore shortstop Jake Schweppe ripped his second double of the day. Once again, junior Daniel Jacobs followed with a single to score Schweppe.

Junior Timmy James and Johnny Wood followed base hits as Maderia found itself with bases loaded.

Sophomore Matt Ballweg kept the rallying going with a single to plate two runs and shift the score to 6-0. After an error by the Georgetown error third baseman on a ball hit by junior Zach Jansen, Maderia moved the scoreboard to 7-0 in their favor.

In the top of the seventh, Georgetown managed to get a run across, but it was too little, too late as Maderia won 7-1.

Tate picked up the win while pitching a complete game. He allowed one earned run in his 7 innings of work.

Caudill took the loss while allowing 4 earned runs in his seven innings of work.

Maderia moves on to the sectional championship against sixth seeded Mariemont, who defeated North College Hill 9-0.
