By Dylan Hefflinger

AVON- In game one of the Ohio Jesuit Cup the No. 11 ranked St. John's Jesuit Titans faced the host No. 50 ranked St. Ignatius Wildcats. The Titans won the opener 5-4 to up their record to 13-4 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 14-8.

Junior infield Jimmy Scott had a huge game, capped off by scoring the winning run in the top of the 5th. The 5-7 scrapper led off the inning with a sharp single to right field and a single by senior Joe Robie followed. Scott stole third to put runners on the corners and, after a strikeout and pickoff of Robie on a third-to-first move, Scott scored on a wild pitch to put the Titans up 5-0. The run proved huge due to a big comeback by Ignatius.

Scott also picked up the save on the mound coming in with the score 5-4 and a runner on first with one out in the 6th. The right-hander allowed a walk to the first batter before striking out the 9-hole hitter and inducing a pop out to the mound. Scott then put together a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 7th, all on groundouts. Scott was in the 78-82 mph range on the fastball.

The Titans got on top early in the top of the 1st. Junior center fielder Liam Allen walked with one out and stole second. With 2 outs, Scott stepped up with an RBI single to right-center field to put the Titans up 1-0.

After a 1-2-3 inning by St. John's starter senior Matt Henderson, the Titans added three more. A lead-off walk by sophomore Nolan Silberhorn and steal of second was followed by a sacrifice bunt by senior Cam Brickman moving Silberhorn to third. Junior catcher Corey Tipton scored Silberhorn with an RBI single before the 9-hole hitter was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out.

A single by Boston College recruit Jesse Adams loaded the bases and Allen plated one with a sharp single to left. University of Toledo recruit Nate Pearson then ripped a single up the middle to up the score to 4-0.

However, St. Ignatius made it interesting in the 6th inning. A bunt single by senior Dan Oaklief started the rally and junior infielder Dan Rowbottom followed with a single to put two on base. A walk to sophomore clean-up hitter Nick Longo loaded the bases.

This brought an end of the day to Henderson, who allowed three runs on four hits, while striking out three.

The 5-10 Brickman came in to relieve Henderson, facing just three batters, striking out the first before an error by the first basemen scored a run. Senior pinch hitter Tim Hawkins delivered with a two- RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4 before Scott closed the door.
