2018 Spring Team Preview: St. Xavier Bombers

Team Name: St. Xavier Bombers
Head Coach: Bob Sherlock
Division: I
2017 Record: 22-5
Conference Record: GCL, South Division, 7-2, 1st
Returning Starters/Pitchers: 3/2

Team Strengths:

  • Pitching
  • Defense
  • Youth
  • Tournament Experience

Coach Outlook: “Expectations for St. Xavier coming into the 2018 season are high despite the graduation of 12 very talented seniors. Starting pitching is expected to be strong with Nathan Kappers (Sr., 8-1, 0.81 ERA, Greater Catholic League South Pitcher of the Year, Indiana University commit) and Wyatt Hudepohl (So., 1-0, 4.04 ERA; drawing top level Division I interest) leading the way. Drew Klare (Sr., RHP, 3-0, 0.60 ERA) and Joe Auberger (Jr., 1.91 ERA) will add critical depth and innings as starters and relievers. The offense will be productive, but is young and untested. Hudepohl and Kappers could be key contributors here as well, along with sophomores Tucker Hundley and Hank Thomas. Chet Larger (Jr., INF/RHP) will solidify the infield defense and the bullpen. Returning lettermen Grant Kirby (Sr., 2B), Tyler Dellerman (Sr., C/1B), and Ben Coffaro (Sr., C/1B) will provide a much needed veteran presence in the lineup. If the pitching performs to its potential and the offense finds its footing early, the Bombers could be competitive in the GCL South race again.”

PBR Outlook: The Bombers and head coach Bob Sherlock are looking to reload after last year's 22-win campaign. Despite losing 12 seniors to graduation, St. Xavier has plenty of talent back and look for them to make a run in 2018 in the always competitive GCL.
