With 2020 now in the past, PBR Ohio is eagerly anticipating bringing the Buckeye state the best 2021 high school coverage that can be found anywhere. Starting in January, we began releasing team previews for squads across the state. Ahead, we will have Preseason All-State Teams as well as the Preseason State Rankings coming your way.

2021 Spring Team Preview: Van Wert Cougars

Team Name: Van Wert Cougars
Head Coach: Charlie Witten
Division: II
2019 Record: 27-3
Returning Starters/Pitchers: 8/6

2021 Team Strengths:

  • Solid #1 pitcher & leader - Owen Treece
  • We should have a pretty deep lineup offensively - Treece, Turner Witten, Josh Halker, Jacob Place, Ethan Rupert, Kaiden Bates should be leaders for our team offensively. We also have some good young players that should make an impact this year - sophomores TJ Stoller, Aiden Pratt, & Luke Wessell

Coach Outlook: "The Van Wert Cougars will look to be very competitive this year. The Cougars should have a balanced offensive attack. Developing depth on the mound & playing good defense will be keys to this seasons outcome."

Top Returning Players:

  • Owen Treece - sr, 5’10”, 175, R/R, 2019 stats- 9-0 with 1 save, 61.1 ip, 1.14 ERA, 13 bb, 56 k 0.88 whip.

Class of 2021 Prospects To Keep Eye On:

  • Owen Treece (Video Below)
  • Josh Halker p, if , 6’1” 250 r/r - will be our #2 or 3 pitcher & be a big bat in our lineup.
  • Jacob Place, 2B 5’8”. 180 r/r - should be our primary 2nd baseman - just a solid all around baseball player.
  • Ries Wise OF 5’9” 160 r/r - will be one of our main outfielders - good defensively & will provide some pop at the plate.
  • Levi Eddins OF
  • Quinton Craig OF
  • Blaze Bolenbaugh p, 3B

Class of 2022 Prospects To Keep Eye On:

  • Turner Witten 1b, P. 6’ 225 r/r - hit .400 in limited time as a freshman. Turner should be a middle of the order bat for us with some power
  • Ethan Rupert - p, utility. 6’3” 190. R/r. Ethan will be our #2 or 3 pitcher & will be a solid all around player. He will play outfield as well as some infield this year.
  • Kaiden Bates 5’8”. 160. L/R. Kaiden will be our #2 catcher & will also play outfield - he will provide some pop from the left side of the plate & has good speed.
  • Ethan Mooney 2B.
  • Breckin Boroff - OF
  • Josh Reichert - 3B

Class of 2023 Prospects To Keep Eye On:

  • TJ Stoller SS, P. 5’8”. 150. R/r -TJ will be our primary shortstop this year & will be very competitive at the plate.
  • Luke Wessell - OF, P 6’ 175. L/L. Luke will compete for an outfield spot & should be one of our top 5 pitchers.
  • Aiden Pratt - 3B. 6’5”. 190. Aiden is a good athlete that will compete for at bats at 3B.

Class of 2024 Prospects To Keep Eye On:

  • Brylen Parker - OF. 5’10” R/R
