With the 2019 spring season right around the corner, PBR Ohio is eagerly anticipating bringing the Buckeye state the best high school coverage throughout the entire state. Starting in January, we began releasing team previews for teams across the state, leading into the Preseason All-State Teams as well as the Preseason State Rankings.

2019 Spring Team Preview: Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish

Team Name: Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish
Head Coach: Matt Weymer
Division: III
2018 Record: 8-17
Conference Record: Independent
Returning Starters/Pitchers: 8/5

2019 Team Strengths:

  • Experience
  • Depth

Coach Outlook: "Consecutive tough seasons have hopefully primed the Irish for a big leap forward in 2019. A tough regular season schedule should pay off when it comes time for the tournament. Ursuline returns to Division 3 after three straight years in Division 2"

PBR Outlook: Coach Matt Weymer looks for his Fighting Irish to take a leap forward after a few down seasons in a row.

Top Returning Players:

  • Vince Armeni (Video - SS/2020) will be a three year starter...last year hit .321 with 7 XBH and 10 SB
  • Jeremy Kreuzwieser (P/OF 2020) will be a three year starter...last year hit .277 and will be a top returning arm after battling injuries last year
  • Glenn Griswold (P 2019) will be a three year starter....led the team in wins, ERA, and IP last year
  • Colin Balas (2B 2020) will be a three year starter....increased production in every offensive category last year and continues to be an excellent defensive player
  • Andrew Sabella (1B 2020) will be a two year starter....led team in RBIs last season and will look to improve on slugging numbers

Top Newcomers:

  • Dante Walker (OF 2021)...steps into a full time role this year
  • Jonah Kirchner (P 2021)....will look to become a consistent part of the team's rotation
  • Ian Barton (P/Util 2021)...versatility will help him gain more time this season
  • Brady Shannon (INF/p 2022)...will compete to contribute as a freshman
  • Dean Boyd (OF 2022)...will compete to contribute as a freshman
