OK High School Preseason Spotlight: Oklahoma Christian Academy

Diego Solares
Staff Writer

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on March 2nd, opening day for regular season action under Ossaa regulations. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2021 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

Perennially, we’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

If you would like your team covered, please have your head coach email us at [email protected]

Our 2021 preseason coverage continues today.

Team: Oklahoma Christian Academy
OSSAA Class: A
Head Coach: Jason Corley
Returning Starters: 3
Returning Pitchers: 2

TOP PLAYERS

Frankie Danel, SS/RHP, 2022

A high-character team leader for this squad, Danel is one of three returning starters for Oklahoma Christian that head coach Jason Corley will rely on for the 2021 season. He’ll play shortstop and log innings on the mound this spring.

Madison Chandler, C/RHP, 2022

Built at a strong and sturdy 6-foot-1, 192-pounds, Chandler is ranked 117th overall in Oklahoma’s junior class. He’s a grinder both on and off the field, providing a spark as a middle-of-the-order type bat for this team while giving them high quality contributions in the club house, too. We recently saw Chandler at our OK Summer Open, and here’s his scouting report from that event:

“6-foot-1, 185-pound sturdy frame. In the box, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 80 mph. Starts in an open stance with a small load, then uses a short stride to start his swing. Bat speed is some, displays short simple swing plane and level finish. Found some barrels during his round. Gap to gap approach. While catching, recorded pop times of 2.18-2.28, throw downs to second topped out at 68 mph; has a developing quick exchange, firm hands and developing feet. Has narrow setup. Some accuracy to the bases, used a ¾ slot with a loose arm action. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 8.4. Average on the mound, had a ¾ arm angle and a loose arm action with good arm speed. Slow-tempo type pitcher and shows some effort. Displays even shoulders with consistent balance point. Lands square with an upright finish. Threw his fastball 76-78 mph; showed tailing action and consistent command. Threw a 11/5 curveball (67-69) with gradual action. Has fading action and some command on his changeup (70-71).”

OUTLOOK

STRENGTHS: “Leadership and infield defense.”

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: “All-around inexperience, especially in the outfield.”
