OK Preseason All-State Analysis: Second Basemen

PBR OK hosted the third annual OK Preseason All-State Showcase at the state of the art World Baseball Outreach indoor facility. There were nearly 95 invite-only players showcased their skill in front of the PBR OK staff, 3 colleges and a pro scout. The talented event saw ten sub 7.00 60s, nine 90+ exit velos, 16 infield velos of 80+, four outfield velos of 85+, seven sub 2.00 second pop times, and 23 max fastballs at 80+ mph. Players profiles have been updated with stats, pictures, and video. The number below do not represent a players all-time best, only what they achieved at this event.

Today, we take an in-depth look at the six second basemen from the event. 

Brae Alonzo 2B / OF / Norman North, OK / 2022

Displayed a lean, athletic 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame with room to add strength as he matures. The right-handed hitter begins with a balanced, even stance with hands starting at the head. A short lift and replace stride coupled with a straight back load allows for a slightly uphill barrel path to enter the hitting zone upon contact. Demonstrated a fluid and repeatable swing off the tee with comfortability in his hands while hitting into a soft front side. Registered an 80 mph bat-exit velocity and ran a 7.08 60-yard dash. The primary middle infielder showcased a quick first step and low center of gravity creating range to both sides. A soft glove hand and smooth transfers generated accurate 71 mph arm-strength across the diamond out of a high ¾ arm-slot with a short takeaway. 

Gavin Blue 2B / SS / Coalgate, OK / 2022

Featured a lean 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame with strength and a solid lower half. The right-handed hitter begins with a balanced, slightly open stance and utilizes a quick lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Barrel whipped through a slightly uphill path in the hitting zone with some length while hitting into a stiff front side. Registered a 77 mph bat-exit velocity off the tee and ran a 7.50 60-yard dash. The middle infielder showcased active feet that arrived to the ball on time consistently and smooth transfers allowing for accurate 76 mph arm-strength across the diamond out of a high ¾ arm-slot. 

Jack Cullen 2B / 3B / Oklahoma Christian School, OK / 2023

Showcased a lean 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame with room to fill out and add strength as he matures. The left-handed hitter begins with a balanced, open stance with quiet hands using a toe-tap stride to initiate his swing.. Entered the zone through a flat barrel path while leaking to the front foot with momentum early in the swing. Registered a 77 mph bat-exit velocity while hitting into a soft front side off the tee.  Recorded an 8.09 60-yard dash. The primary middle infielder demonstrated athletic actions with soft hands out in front. Footwork can improve with more active steps creating momentum towards the target. Notched a 73 mph arm-strength across the diamond out a quick, high ¾ arm-slot. 

Hunter Hall 2B / RHP / Skiatook, OK / 2021

Displayed a stocky 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame with present strength in his actions. The left-handed hitter begins with a bent, wide setup utilizing a toe-tap stride to initiate his swing. Top hand generates barrel whip through a slightly uphill path into the hitting zone. Showcased feel for the pull-side off the tee while registering an 81 mph bat-exit velocity. Ran a 7.50 60-yard dash. The primary middle infielder demonstrated active feet and a low center of gravity that played with momentum towards the target. Showed range to both sides and the ability to make the play on the run. Notched accurate throws of 74 mph across the diamond out of a high ¾ arm-slot. 

Braydon Hutchings 2B / RHP / Edison preparatory , OK / 2021

Showcased a lean 5-foot-9, 155-pound frame with athleticism in his actions. The right-handed hitter begins with a bent, open stance utilizing a lift-and-replace stride to initiate a slightly uphill barrel path through the zone. Hit into a stiff front side with an easy, repeatable swing generating an 80 mph bat-exit velocity off the tee. Ran a 7.25 60-yard dash. Demonstrated easy, fluid actions during defensive evaluations with feet that arrived on time and played through the ball consistently. Made the play on the run look easy with ability to throw from different arm angles. Quick transfers and soft hands created accurate 84 mph throws across the diamond out of a fluid, high ¾ arm-slot. 

Brenden Poindexter 2B / 3B / Owasso, OK / 2020

Displayed a physical 6-foot, 190-pound frame with feel for his body and strength in his actions. The right-handed hitter begins with a slightly open stance utilizing a lift-and-replace stride to initiate a slightly uphill barrel path into the zone. Showcased lower half sink with quick hip rotation generating hard barrels to the middle of the field off the tee. Registered an 84 mph bat-exit velocity and ran a 7.51 60-yard dash. The middle infielder showed adequate footwork with range to both sides while creating momentum towards the target during defensive evaluations. A soft glove hand worked well out in front and repeatable transfers yielded accurate 75 mph arm-strength across the infield out of a quick, high ¾ arm-slot.
