OK Preseason Preview: Choctaw

Oklahoma Staff

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 21 for A-B, and March 1 for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2022 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

Our 2022 preseason coverage continues today.

Team: Choctaw
2021 Record: 23-15
Classification: 6A
Head Coach: Shane Hawk
Years at the Helm: 7

OUTLOOK

The Yellowjackets of Choctaw head into the 2022 season with one of the more talented rosters in the State with multiple impact player returners off of last year's squad.  Coach Hawk's roster is loaded with players that have shown the ability to hit at the Varsity level and should have one of the toughest lineups 1-9 in the State.  They have athletes all over the field with some of the best team speed to go along with physical hitters in the lineup creating multiple facets to attack opponents with.  They have a strong balance of upperclassmen with experience and younger players with strong skills.  They also have a couple of power arms on their staff that have shown the ability to miss bats in the past to go along with a couple arms with high pitchability.  Coach Hawk's Yellowjackets should be primed for a big Spring in 2022 as one of the more talented rosters in the State and look for them be a legitimate State Title contender.

Impact PLAYERS

Gabe Davis, 2022, RHP/OF, Oklahoma State commit

Davis returns for his Senior year looking to anchor the staff for the Yellowjackets in 2022.  The OSU commit has a big arm working from a lanky 6-7 frame with the fastball working in the upper 80's and will reach the lower 90's with a feel for shaping two breaking balls.  The ball explodes out of his hand and he's able to generate high spin rates to help miss bats.  Davis has shown up in big games in the past including his no-hitter he threw in his final start in the regionals last Spring.  Look for Davis to anchor a talented pitching staff and lead the way pitching on Monday or Tuesday nights.

Gabe Davis (6/9/20)

Phoenix Meza, 2022, INF, Oklahoma State commit

Meza returns after a big Spring in 2021 and will look to continue to be a run producing force in the Yellowjacket lineup.  The OSU is one of the best overall athletes in the State with a 60 time in the 6.5's and strong defensive actions up the middle.  Meza uses his loose swing with good bat speed to collect hits in bunches and has shown strong gap power that makes his speed even more of a weapon.  Look for Meza to continue to be a big cog in the middle of one of the deeper lineups in the State.

Phoenix Meza (7/14/20)

Jesse Tisdell, 2022, OF/INF, Johnson County CC commit

The speedy centerfielder returns to the lineup as the table setter at the top of the order for Choctaw.  The Johnson County commit is one of the fastest players in the State with a sub 6.5 60 and uses that speed to run down balls in the outfield and create havoc on the base paths.  Tisdell has a very short and direct swing with good routes to the ball and will shoot line drives all over the field.  Expect Tisdell to continue to jump start the offense out of the leadoff spot as well as provide excellent defense in center to help lead Choctaw to a deep run in May.

Jesse Tisdell (7/13/21)

Spencer Boles, 2022, OF, Oklahoma commit

Boles brings a physical presence to the lineup with some of the strongest hands at contact in the State.  The OU commit is able to generate strong exit velocities with good bat speed to go along with good footspeed and a strong arm from the corner outfielder giving him multiple tools to utilize.  Boles has a tendency to get on hot streaks where he can take over games with his ability to drive balls in the gaps and should continue to increase his power numbers after getting good experience throughout 2021.  Boles allows Choctaw to spread its already deep lineup and brings a real run-producing presence to the offense.

Spencer Boles (6/1/21)

Jarrett Flaggert, 2022, INF, Eastern Oklahoma State JC commit

Flaggert returns to the lineup after putting up a productive season in 2021 hitting in the middle of the order.  The EOSC commit provides good flexibility to the lineup where he spent 2021 as the starting second baseman and his athleticism allows him to be used all over the field to fit multiple needs.  Flaggert is able to generate strong exit velocities with good bat speed while showing good power to the pull side.  Where Flaggert's contribution might be seen most is his high baseball IQ and leadership qualities.  Choctaw will not only rely on Flaggert's offensive abilities but as a leader of one of the more talented teams in the State in helping them make a deep run into the playoffs.

Jarrett Flaggert (10/31/21)

Drake Fittro, 2024, OF

Fittro jumped onto the scene in 2021 as a freshman that the coaching staff relied on throughout the season working in the two-hole and providing big production against some of the top pitchers in the State.  Fittro has a compact stroke from the left side with really good balance and shows the ability to match plane and get on time with the fastball.  Fittro also provides some pitching depth to the Yellowjackets and was used a starter on multiple occasions in 2021.  It was tough to stand out in Choctaw's high-octane offense but Fittro was able to make his presence known and should be primed for an even bigger campaign in 2022.

Drake Fittro (6/8/21)

Cash Williams, 2025, C/RHP

It isn't very often where before even taking a single swing in high school where a player can be considered a potential impact player.  Cash Williams has the skill set and physicality that most freshman haven't been able to obtain yet and will provide a big jolt to the Yellowjackets early in his career.  Williams already shows advanced catching skills with low pop times to go along with a physical swing with good strength in the hands.  Williams is also a high level athlete with a 6.81 that already makes him one of the most athletic catchers in the State.  Williams will also get some time on the mound where he works the fastball in the mid 80's and shows a feel for pitching.  This skill set makes him one of the top freshman in the State and Country and look for Williams to make an immediate impact on the Yellowjackets.

Cash Williams (7/28/21)

Ethan Rone, 2022, INF, Murray State JC commit

Rone returns to the lineup after manning the hot corner for the Yellowjackets last season as well as working as a team captain type leader.  The Murray State JC commit has the ability to play anywhere on the infield and also has shown some strong abilities behind the plate where he might project best at the next level.  Rone has good strength in the hands at contact to go along with good bat speed that generates consistent hard contact.  Rone provides good value to the lineup with some physicality with the bat and positional versatility which allows the Yellowjackets options as they look to make a run in 2022.
