OK Preseason Preview: Edmond Santa Fe

Oklahoma Staff

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 21 for A-B, and March 1 for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2022 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

Our 2022 preseason coverage continues today.

Team: Edmond Santa Fe
2021 Record: 19-15
Classification: 6A
Head Coach: Ryan Phillips
Years at the Helm: 8

OUTLOOK

Coach Phillips' 2021 squad had plenty of challenges battling injuries and getting a slow start out of the gate but rebounded in a big way making it to the State Tournament.  There will be a few holes to fill for the 2022 squad after the graduation of guys like Cayden Brumbaugh, Morgan Lunceford, and Cooper Jenson but they do have the luxury of a few more power 5 committed arms to pick up the slack.  They boast one of the top collections of power arms on one staff in the State and have multiple guys with big experience to rely on as they work to get back to Championship contention.  Offensively they have multiple guys that have shown the ability to get it done at the Varsity level as well as a few younger guys that are showing some real potential.  Getting out of the gates here in early March will be key for the Wolves to allow their talent play up at a high level and continue to build confidence along the way.  If the right pieces produce and they stay relatively healthy throughout the Spring, Santa Fe has the type of roster to put together a special season and be a true contender for hoisting that State Championship plaque in May.

Impact PLAYERS

Kade Shatwell, 2022, RHP, Oklahoma State commit

The OSU commit returns to the mound for his senior season as one of the top arm talents in the State.  The ace of the staff will again take the ball in the all-important district games where he uses his low 90's fastball and power curveball to miss bats.  Santa Fe will look for him to provide that leadership on the mound and take the ball in the biggest games of the year and he should play a large role on their quest to get back to the State Championship.

Kade Shatwell (7/26/19)

Logan Lunceford, 2022, RHP, Missouri commit

Lunceford gives the Wolves another talented arm to rely on throughout the Spring and gives them potential ace type stuff.  He has shown the ability to work the fastball into the upper 80's and low 90's with good arm side run as well as a sharp downer breaking ball into the lower 70's.  Lunceford will head the University of Missouri next fall but will look to provide a big spark to the pitching staff for the Wolves in the Spring.

Logan Lunceford (7/29/20)

Blake Seefeldt, 2022, 1B/RHP, Rose State JC commit

Seefeldt provides a nice punch to the lineup after hitting in the middle of the order in 2021.  Seefeldt has tremendous bat speed and will show some real strength at contact providing the Wolves a physical presence and stretching the lineup.  Blake will also grab the ball on the mound and provide Sante Fe with another power arm working the fastball in the past up to 89 mph.  The Rose State commit will be relied upon to not only be a run-producing force in the lineup but also get key outs on the mound throughout the Spring.

Blake Seefeldt (6/1/21)

Jase White, 2022, C, NOC Enid commit

White returns to catching duties after spending the 2021 season behind the plate.  White has had the ability to catch multiple premium arms throughout his career and it shows with his advanced pitch framing and blocking abilities.  White is no slouch with the bat however and will look to get back in the middle of the lineup and take on a larger role in run production.  The NOC Enid commit will be looked at to continue to provide the all-important defense from behind the plate as well as chipping away offensively for the Wolves in 2022.

Jase White (7/13/21)

Devin Mitchell, 2023, OF/RHP, Tarleton State commit

Mitchell showed well this past summer at the Future Games and continues to show strides made in the past couple of months.  At last month's Preseason All-State event, the Tarleton State commit produced exit velocities up to 100 mph but more importantly showed an improved swing path and looser hands.  He also will show some serious arm strength where he hit 94 mph from the outfield and can provide solid defense at first base as well.  Mitchell provides Santa Fe options defensively and will look for his bat to be a big part of the lineup in 2022.
