OK Preseason Preview: Midwest City

Oklahoma Staff

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 21 for A-B, and March 1 for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2022 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

Our 2022 preseason coverage continues today.

Team: Midwest City
2021 Record: 18-19
Classification: 5A
Head Coach: Brady Baugh
Years at the Helm: 3

OUTLOOK

The 2021 Bombers worked to almost a .500 clip last season finishing just a game under at 18-19.  A lot of their offensive production came from talented underclassmen who gained valuable experience at the Varsity level which should pay dividends for the program moving forward.  Coach Baugh's squad will have a new challenge in 2022 heading down a level to 5A which will bring on a new set of opponents and programs to prepare for.  The outlook is bright for the Bombers as they boast two of the better athletes in the State both playing in the middle of the diamond and have shown the ability to handle Varsity level pitching.  They also return 8 other players with Varsity starting experience which should play a big factor for their potential success in 5A and give them a chance to make a run in the State Tournament.

Impact PLAYERS

DeAngelo Irvin Jr, 2023, INF/P

Irvin Jr. returns to the line-up after a breakout campaign in 2021 which saw him hit at a .422 clip and manning the shortstop position for the Bombers.  Irvin Jr. has a short stroke with quick hands and good bat speed that he uses to generate exit velocities in the mid 90's.  He utilizes a line drive approach and shows the ability to drive the ball to all fields well.  Defensively he uses his athleticism and smooth actions to cover a lot of ground in the middle of the diamond and shows enough arm strength to make plays deep in the hole.  His athleticism shines not only on the diamond but also on the gridiron where he will be Midwest City HS' first ever four-year starter at QB.  The Bombers will look for Irvin Jr. to be a quarterback on the baseball field in 2022 and continue to be a force in the lineup hitting in the middle of their order.

DeAngelo Irvin Jr (12/12/21)

Bryan Williams Jr. 2024, OF/P

Williams Jr. jumped onto the scene in 2021 as a freshman hitting at a .395 clip that also saw a lot of extra base power.  Williams Jr. is highly athletic and has smooth swing mechanics to go along with strong tools.  He uses his athletic swing and good balance to create consistent hard contact on a line and look for more power production from him in the future as he continues to add strength.  Williams Jr. is also a quality outfielder that can cover some ground and has one of the stronger arms in the 2024 class.  He spent the 2021 season as a table setter at the top of the lineup and look for the Bombers to continue to rely on him as a major piece in their offense.

Bryan Williams Jr (2/6/21)

Juwan Dancy, 2022, OF/P

Dancy returns for his senior year and his 4th year of starting at the Varsity level for the Bombers.  Last season Dancy worked mostly out of the 4-hole in the lineup and put-up a very respectable .351 average at the plate.  This year the Bombers will be relying on Dancy to be one of their leaders on the mound and pick up starts in district contests.  Dancy will fill multiple roles on the 2022 Bombers squad but most importantly will be providing big leadership as a returner with a ton of experience.
