OK Sandlot All-American Scout Day Upgrades: Catcher Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma teamed up with Sandlot All-American baseball for the second annual Scout Day Upgrade on May 19th-20th at Broken Arrow HS in Tulsa and Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond. Nearly 60 players from 2021-2018 class participated in the PBR upgrade. Each player participated in a pro style showcase to show their skills and record measurables in front the PBR staff. 

Though many of the players covered below are talented two way players, they will be covered as catchers today with pitchers analysis already on profiles.

Hayden Barnes C / OF / Collinsville, OK / 2021

A 5-foot-5, 140-pound frame with some strength throughout. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from an even and back leg heavy set-up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a short and smooth load with a short stride before launching his hands on a flat path to contact with a high finish. In BP, shows a middle to opposite field flat approach, mostly barrels, 81 mph exit velo. Runs an 8 second 60. Defensively, from behind the dish, shows balanced, clean, and consistent actions. Throws from a typical catchers slot, throws were inline, using the turf to keep throws low and on the bag, 72 mph to second base with showcase pop times of 2.22-2.32. 


Ethan Boyer C / OF / Deer Creek, OK / 2020

A 5-foot-7, 165-pound proportional frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an athletic, open, and front foot heavy set-up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a small hanging leg kick and late barrel tip before launching his hands on flat path through extension. In BP, shows a middle to pull approach, mainly flat sound ground, some barrels, 80 mph exit velo. Runs a 6.95 second 60. Defensively, from behind the dish, receives from a narrow base with flexibility in his hips. Transfers are clean and arm action is short and deliberate coming through an over the top slot, some accuracy,  71 mph to second base with showcase pop times of 2.2-2.35. 


Chance Condit C / RHP / Salina, OK / 2021

A physically advanced 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide and knee-knocked set-up with rhythm throughout. Uses a smooth rocking load with a short stride before launching his hands on a flat path through extension. In BP, shows a middle to opposite field and flat approach, mostly barrels, 81 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.66 second 60. Defensively, receives from a narrow set-up, shows clean exchanges, footwork is quick for his size, throws with a moderate arm stroke through a high-¾ slot with arm strength and some accuracy, 76 mph to second base with showcase pop times of 2.03-2.14.


Wyatt Gardner C / SS / Kiowa, OK / 2019

A 5-foot-9, 155-pound proportional frame. Offensively the right-handed hitter bats from a quiet, slightly closed and back leg heavy set-up. Uses a short load and stride before launching his hands on an efficient and flat path through extension. In BP, shows a consistent pull gap approach with occasional lift, almost all barrels, 81 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.33 second 60. Defensively, from behind the dish, receives with soft hands from a balanced set-up with some sway. 71 mph to second base with showcase pop times of 2.07-2.16. 


Cayde Hawkes C / 3B / Chouteau, OK / 2020

A 5-foot-10, 230-pound frame. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from a quiet, open, and upright set-up. Uses a simple load and moderate stride before sending his hands on a slightly uphill path. In BP, shows a middle of the field and mostly flat approach, some barrels, 78 mph exit velo. Runs an 8.1 second 60. Defensively, from behind the dish, catches from a wide base with flexibility in his hips. Throws with a short arm stoke coming through an over the top slot with some accuracy, 65 mph to second base with showcase pop times of 2.5-2.6. 


Sutton Spradlin C / 3B / Berryhill , OK / 2021

A 5-foot-10,155-pound developing frame with room to add size and strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide and upright stance. Uses a smooth knee-knock load before launching his hands on a slightly uphill path with big extension. In BP, shows an all fields approach, mostly barrels, some lift, 84 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.31 second 60. Defensively, from behind the dish, shows clean exchanges and quick hands, throwing with a very short arm stroke coming through a high-¾ slot, a mostly accurate 71 mph to second base with showcase pop times of 2.13-2.20. 


Ethan Wells C / Broken Arrow, OK / 2020

A 5-foot-11, 200-pound durable frame. The right-handed hitter bats from an open and athletic set-up with lots of rhythm throughout. Uses a small coiling leg lift and late barrel tip and arm-bar load before launching his hands on a flat path to contact with a high finish and big extension. In BP, shows a middle to pull flat approach, mostly barrels, 80 mph exit velo. Runs an 8.1 second 60. Defensively, from behind the plate, receives from a flexible athletic set-up. Footwork takes him wide around the dish. Throws with a typical catchers arm slot and stroke, some accuracy, 72 mph to second base with showcase pop times of 2.25-2.35. 


Parker Whittle RHP / C / Regent Preparatory, OK / 2021

A 6-foot, 192-pound durable frame. The right-handed hitter bats from an open and back leg heavy set-up with rhythm throughout. Uses a moderate knee-knock load with a hand pump before launching them on a slightly uphill path with some length. In BP, shows a middle to pull side approach with some lift and pop with some barrels, 84 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.74 second 60. Defensively, behind the plate, shows soft and strong hands when receiving and clean exchanges, coming out of the crouch early at times. Throws from a typical catchers slot with some carry and excellent accuracy, 71 mph to second base with showcase pop times of 2.03-2.15.
