OSSAA 6A Regional Preview: Edmond Memorial Regional

Scott Hood
Staff Writer

The big school regionals are across the state this week and for the first time in nearly two years we have elimination baseball in the spring. After a packed spring of covering high school baseball and many of the top prospects on each team at all levels, PBR takes an in-depth look at each team in every 6A regional. Each team is spotlighted with a look at their team profile and outlook as well as a few of their impact players who have stood out this spring and players to watch as they enter the postseason.

EDMOND MEMORIAL BULLDOGS

OVERALL RECORD: 24-8

DISTRICT RECORD: 12-2

The Bulldogs used their talented roster to carry them to a District championship in 2021 and will be looking to make a deep run into the postseason.  They have a good mix of athletes and grinder type players in their lineup which makes them difficult to navigate as well as having one of the deeper pitching staffs in the State.  With frontline starters that are capable of taking over games and well-skilled position players, look for the Bulldogs to be a tough out in the Regional play this week.

IMPACT PLAYERS

PARKER COIL, 1B/LHP, 2022 – The Junior left hander has the type of frontline stuff you are looking for in a pitcher in the postseason.  He attacks hitters with his upper 80’s cutting fastball and his low 70’s breaking ball with good depth.  Coil is a good overall athlete that carries his stuff deep into games as well as provides a lot of the offense hitting in the middle of the order and providing good defense at first base.

NOAH KANG, SS, 2022 – The Junior shortstop has shown really good athleticism at both the plate and in the middle of the diamond this year for the Bulldogs.  He has quick twitch actions both at the plate and in the field and can really put pressure on the defense with his speed.  He has shown the ability to handle the bat and provide good gap power to all fields this Spring.

AARON WEBER, RHP, 2021 – The Senior right hander possesses one of the better arms in the State with an electric fastball in the 88-92 range.  When everything is working in rhythm, he can take over games and overpower hitters racking up big strikeout numbers.

OWEN TRACY, UTL, 2022 – The Junior utility man has stepped up for the Bulldogs manning the middle of the order.  He uses his long-levered swing and good bat speed to drive the ball into the gaps with some pop as well as providing them with a lot of options in the field.

JENKS TROJANS

OVERALL RECORD: 26-9

DISTRICT RECORD: 9-5

The Trojans have been one of the more consistent teams all season long with winning games in multiple fashions.  Their offense has shown the ability to put up runs in big numbers at times as well as being able to win four out of five one run games this year.  They are entering the postseason on a bit of a hot streak since April (13-4) and will look to carry that momentum into Regional play.

IMPACT PLAYER

BROOKS FOWLER, SS/RHP, 2021 – The senior ace on the mound and starting short stop has been carrying a big load for the Trojans all year.  On the mound he has shown a fastball that reaches the low 90’s with good arm side run to go along with a short action slider and quality changeup.  When the stuff is firing on all cylinders it is good enough to shut down any offense in the State.  At the plate he uses his quick bat and hand strength to drive balls into the gaps with some pop and also plays very solid defense in the middle of the diamond.

ENID PLAINSMEN

OVERALL RECORD: 22-11

DISTRICT RECORD: 8-6

After getting off to a rough 3-10 start to the season, the Plainsmen have gotten red hot winning 14 games in a row making them the hottest team heading into Regional play.  They have been rattling off wins against some of the more talented teams in the State this year and the biggest key has been their ability to limit the amount of runs per game especially in the last half of the season.  They will be looking to carry this heavy momentum on and make another run at a State tournament.

IMPACT PLAYERS

GARRETT SHULL, INF, 2024 – The Freshman shortstop has been backing up the hype he garnered as a top player before even entering high school.  The switch hitter has a balanced approach from both sides and has been able to hold his own all season long against good pitching.  Working out of the two spot in the lineup, the experienced gained all season should have Shull very comfortable in a playoff setting.

BLAKE PRIEST, RHP, 2021 – The senior right hander has been the ace of the staff all season long for the Plainsmen.  He works the fastball in the upper 80’s and reaching the low 90’s at times from a high ¾ arm slot and good extension down the mound.  When the stuff is working on all cylinders, Priest is capable of shutting down any offense in the State.

MUSKOGEE ROUGHERS

OVERALL RECORD: 2-14

DISTRICT RECORD: 1-13

The Roughers have had a tough season in the win/loss column but the overall records don’t tell the entire story.  Having played one of the tougher schedules in the State, Muskogee only competed in 16 with only 2 games coming out of their tough district.  They have given a few teams some scares especially down the stretch as well with a lineup full of younger players.
