Oklahoma Winter Open I.D.: Corner Infielder Analysis

On December 18th, Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma held its second event, the Oklahoma Winter Open I.D., in Yukon Oklahoma. Over 40 players from around the state from every high school class attended the event while college coaches and a pro scout took note.

Player profiles have been updated with profile pictures, stats, and videos. In days to come, we will break down the event position-by-position. Today, we will take an in-depth look at the eight corner infielders in attendance. Those many of them are two-way players, they will be covered today as infielders. Corner Infielders

Ethan Crews, 3B, Choctaw HS, 2018
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound strong frame. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle of the field approach, some lift. Balanced athletic set up, slight leg kick, short to the ball, aggressive swing, rotational finish. Hit the majority of the balls of the back net with some bat speed and strength, 87 mph exit velo. Defensively, average hands and feet, good to the backhand side. A quick arm that is accurate from multiple slots, 76 mph.  Ran a 4.59 home-to-first.

Justin Freas, 1B, Elk City HS, 2017
A 5-foot-11, 270-pound frame.  Offensively, left-handed hitter, all fields approach, shows strength when balls are barreled. Wide open stance, big knee-know leg kick, quick hands, slightly uphill path, 86 mph exit velo. Defensively, good hands, accurate arm, 73 mph from a high-3/4 slot.

Hunter Gholston, 3B, Elk City HS, 2018
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound athletic frame. Offensively, left-handed hitter, mainly middle of the field approach, some strength to the opposite field, groundball /line drive results. Uses a back leg heavy set up with a slight squat, toe tap stride, flat through contact, some length. Posses bat speed and hand strength,tied for an event best 90 mph exit velo. Defensively, shows athleticism, especially on the slow roller play, fields the ball a deep, average feet. High-3/4 slot, 82 mph, some accuracy. Ran an event best 3.95 home-to-first.

Colby Jarnagin, 3B, Enid HS, 2020
A 6-foot, 180-pound frame with long legs. Offensively, left-handed hitter, middle of the field approach, flat/on the ground, easy swing. Slightly back leg heavy set up, knee-knock load, low hands, smooth swing, 81 mph exit velo. Defensively, soft hands, clean 3/4 slot, 70 mph across the infield.

Cade Lott, 3B,  McAlester HS, 2020
A 5-foot-11, 175-pound advanced athletic build. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle opposite filed approach, lifts most balls. Hits from a balanced stance, big knee-knock leg kick, arm bar load, some length, uphill path.  Showed advanced bat speed for his age, 85 mph exit velo,  and barreled almost every ball in the cage.  Defensively, good hands, clean footwork, smooth exchanges, 3/4 slot,  73 mph. Ran a 4.64 home-to-first.

Andrew Schulz, 3B, Community Christian School, 2018
A 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-opposite field approach, some lift. Hits from a narrow base, rotational load with hand drop, moderate stride, uphill path, and abbreviated finish.  Made some clean contact, 80 mph exit velo. Runs a 5.0 second home-to-first. Defensively, methodical actions, throws from a 3/4 slot, 65 mph.

Dalton Smith, 1B, Choctaw HS, 2018
A 6-foot, 180-pound athletic build with long levers.  Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle of the field approach, some lift. Hits form an athletic open stance, short stride, late heal plant, and good rhythm. Flashes advanced bat speed, hitting some balls very hard, 89 mph exit velo. Tied for second best at the event with a 4.15 home-to-first. Defensively, quick athletic actions, good hands, average feet. Throws from an over the top slot with accuracy, 75 mph.

Caden Young, 1B, Choctaw HS, 2019
A 6-foot, 165 pound frame with broad shoulders. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-opposite field approach, mostly flat. Uses and athletic, slightly open stance, smooth load, slight toe tap, short to the ball, rotational finish. Barreled some balls, 82 mph exit velo. Defensively, good feet and hands, short over the top arm action, 74 mph. Ran a 4.53 home-to-first.
