PBR OK OSSAA Team Previews: Bishop Kelley Comets

Scott Hood
OK/MO/KS/ARK Assistant Scouting Director

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 20th for A-B, and March 1st for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2023 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided as well as our own coverage on players in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

Bishop Kelley High School on Twitter:

Team: Bishop Kelley Comets
2022 Record: 21-12
Classification: 5A
Head Coach: Parker Frazier
Years at the Helm: 1st year at Bishop Kelley

OUTLOOK

Parker Frazier takes over the helm at his alma mater after a strong run at Holland Hall over the past couple of years.  The 2022 Comets caught fire down the stretch making it into the 5A State Tournament before a quick exit against the eventual champions from Duncan.  They have a few holes to fill such as last year's ace and shortstop Andrew Talburt, first baseman Reid Williams, and outfielder Eric Thompson.  Coach Frazier will have a versatile lineup that features multiple players that can play different positions offering up some flexibility day-to-day.  The biggest question mark is their lack of Varsity experience and having to break in a ton of new faces to the everyday lineup.   The roster has talent and some depth with multiple guys currently fighting for spots in the lineup and on the bump.  With a tough schedule on the docket, look for the Comets to be battle tested early and they will hope that experience of taking on some of the State's best will pay dividends come play off time.

IMPACT PLAYERS

Jackson Archambeau, MIF/OF, 2023

Archambeau is one of the returning starters from last year's lineup and he will use his athleticism to play all over the field.  Jackson has the range and smoothness to play in the middle on the infield as well as the speed to cover some ground out in center field if need be.  Offensively he has added strength in the off season and his quick twitch swing should continue to play up at a higher level.  Heading into his senior season the Comets will rely on Archambeau to take on an expanded role in the offense and play a larger part in the overall run-production of the offense.

Grayson Smith, UTL/RHP, 2023, Seminole State JC commit

Smith got some valuable time on the field for the Comets last year working mainly as a starter on the mound as well as picking up some at bats along the way.  The Seminole commit uses a heavy sinking fastball in the mid 80's and sweeping curveball to keep hitters off the barrel.  With the amount of action he gets on the fastball, when down in the zone it becomes very difficult to square up and induces a lot of weak contact.  Offensively he has some strength in the hands with some power potential coming from his physical 6-foot-4 and 190-pound frame.  The Comets will need to see his role continue to expand especially on the mound and take some of the more important innings on the bump in 2023.

Reid Jones, 1B, 2024

There aren't too many hitters in the state that can match Jones' physical presence in the box standing at 6-foot-4 and 270-pounds.  Jones uses his high level of strength to launch balls with advanced hand strength and bat speed with exit velocities approaching the upper 90's.  Jones is also a very solid athlete for his size with strong footwork and more speed than some would realize.  Jones has shown the ability to drive balls to all fields depending on where the ball is pitched and will be counted on to provide a much needed punch to the middle of the Comets' lineup.

Tanner McMurray, C/INF, 2024

McMurray returns back to the lineup after picking up starting action as a sophomore in 2022 and will be used in multiple different ways for the Comets this season.  Last year McMurray spent majority of his time handling the hot corner and this year will see his role expand to other positions in the infield as well as getting back behind the plate.  McMurray shows his most promise as a catcher where he has a very quick release and throws showing strong carry and accuracy to the bag.  Offensively he has a short and compact stroke that produces hard line drives from gap to gap.  After a year of getting his feet wet at the Varsity level, look for McMurray to have a potential breakout campaign in his junior year in 2023.

Tycen Armour, OF/RHP, 2025

One of the biggest surprises out of the Preseason All-State was the emergence of Tycen Armour both on the mound and in the outfield.  Armour saw massive jumps in his tools since the last time we've seen him and he has the type of projectability to make him a true impact player on both sides of the ball.  On the mound Armour worked in the mid 80's with riding life through the zone and flashed a plus slider in the low 70's with advanced spin and action.  In the outfield he showed big arm strength for the class registering in at 88 mph and showing off some athleticism running a 6.95 60.  With this big jump in tools and his lean and athletic frame of 6-foot and 160-pounds, look for Armour to continue to make jumps and should be a definite follow in the future.
