PBR OK OSSAA Team Previews: Edmond Santa Fe Wolves

Scott Hood
OK/MO/KS/ARK Assistant Scouting Director

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 20th for A-B, and March 1st for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2023 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided as well as our own coverage on players in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

Edmond Santa Fe High School (Edmond, OK) Athletics

Team: Edmond Santa Fe Wolves
2022 Record: 31-12
Classification: 6A
Head Coach: Romus Cezar
Years at the Helm: First Year

OUTLOOK

Coach Cezar takes over the reigns in his first year as head coach for Santa Fe one year after the Wolves made it to the 6A State Title game.  He will have some big shoes to fill off the roster that lost multiple impact players such as Kade Shatwell, Logan Lunceford, Blake Seefeldt, and Jase White.  The lack of Varsity experience on the roster is a big question mark heading into the season but the roster has the type of talent to make another run in 2023.  The lineup has a good mix of speed and power and the returning hitters to the lineup have all proven themselves against some of the State's best arms.  Their biggest attribute is how strong they are defensively especially up the middle of the diamond.  The Wolves will have several new faces in the lineup and taking the mound and getting them up to speed and comfortable early in the year will be key as they look to make another run in 2023.

IMPACT PLAYERS

Devin Mitchell, UTL/RHP, 2023, Tarleton State Commit

Mitchell returns as the most experienced starter for the Wolves and will be counted on as the main run-producer in the middle of the lineup.  The right-handed hitter has very strong bat speed that shows up in games with the ball jumping off the barrel.  He provides a ton of versatility being able to play both in the outfield as well as first base where his big arm can help erase base runners at ease.  Mitchell can also provide some innings on the mound to help provide the Wolves with more depth.  The Wolves will need to rely on his experience and physicality in the lineup to help lead the offense in 2023.

Carson Brumbaugh, SS, 2025

Brumbaugh returns as the everyday starter at shortstop off of last year's squad gaining valuable experience at the Varsity level as a freshman.  Brumbaugh has some of the best defensive actions in the state and shows the range and arm to make plays at an advanced level.  Offensively he's seen massive jumps since last spring and has shown the ability to hit balls with exit velocities above 100 mph in multiple settings.  His line drive approach and level bat path gives him excellent plate coverage and ability to work the ball from line to line.  Brumbaugh has proven himself on the national stage to be considered amongst the best of the middle infielders in the country for the 2025 class and should be primed for a breakout spring for Santa Fe.

Jackson MacWilliams, 1B/LHP, 2023, Barton CC commit

MacWilliams played a large role for the Wolves both on the mound and in the lineup in 2022 and will be counted on again to provide that production in 2023.  Offensively the left-handed hitter has sneaky pop to the pull side thanks to a strong levered swing and strong balance.  MacWilliams is another guy who can provide some positional versatility for the Wolves being able to play first base as well as run balls down in the outfield.  On the mound MacWilliams is able to rack up K's in a hurry and will be counted on again to log important innings in the starting rotation.
