PBR OK OSSAA Team Previews: Fort Cobb Broxton Mustangs

Scott Hood
OK/MO/KS/ARK Assistant Scouting Director

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 20th for A-B, and March 1st for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2023 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided as well as our own coverage on players in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

2022 Record: 27-5
Classification: Class B
Head Coach: Dale Bellamy

OUTLOOK

The Mustangs have had a wild ride over the past couple of months dropping the Class B State Championship game to Roff in the Spring before getting their revenge in the Fall State tournament taking home the Title.  Even with an overall enrollment in their entire school district hovering around 300 total students, the Mustangs are able to put together a roster that is capable of taking down programs with more athletes to pull from and with more resources shown by their 16 wins last year against teams from a higher class.  Offensively they have a relentless attack with some premium hitters that are capable of taking over games.  Defensively they are strong up the middle and have a stable of strike throwers that come right after hitters.  If the Mustangs can continue to get solid starting pitching this Spring, look for them to try and make a full 2022-2023 school year sweep in Class B.

IMPACT PLAYERS

Jaxon Willits, INF/RHP, 2023, OU commit

Willits has been a mainstay for the Mustangs his entire career and currently ranks as the number 2 overall player in the state and 200 nationally.  The switch hitter has some of the best plate discipline in the area seemingly always able to stay on balance and attacks his pitch as good as anyone in the country.  He is a true switch hitter with a line drive approach from both sides and is very difficult to keep off the barrel.  Defensively he has continued to make big strides in the middle of the diamond.  He has always had the smooth actions and arm strength it takes to play on the left side and in our most recent look at him back in October he has added a good amount of range to his game.  With his experience and high skill set, look for Willits to once again lead the Mustangs in the middle of the order as well as log big innings on the mound in 2023.

Eli Willits, MIF, 2026, OU commit

Not to be outdone by his older brother, Eli more than holds his own and currently ranks as the number one overall prospect in Oklahoma for the 2026 class and 21st overall nationally.  Like his brother, Eli is already an accomplished switch hitter that has advanced hand strength and should continue to add power to his game as he continues to add strength to his frame.  Willits has some of the best bat speed in the class from both sides of the plate and a high level of athleticism that shows up in the swing.  This past fall we saw him playing second base where he has a strong feel for footwork and routes around the ball and he shows advanced range giving the Mustangs one of the best middle infields in the state.   Willits performed at a high level in the fall season and should be primed for a big Spring in 2023.
