PBR OK OSSAA Team Previews: Owasso Rams

Scott Hood
OK/MO/KS/ARK Assistant Scouting Director

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 20th for A-B, and March 1st for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2023 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided as well as our own coverage on players in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

OUTLOOK

The Rams finished off their 2022 campaign once again capturing the 6A State Title thanks in large part to strong pitching performances and clutch hitting down the stretch.  When you win a State Championship that usually means there are a ton of holes to fill the following year and that is no different in the Rams' case.  Replacing multiple impact seniors like Brenden Phillips, Soloman Skalnik, Jackson Smith, Noah Smallwood, Zach Burnes, Cole Deason, Bennett Flanary, and Jacob Morrow.  Replacing this amount of impact players would be tough for any program but Coach Turner always seems to find a way to reload instead of rebuild.  This reloading in 2023 can be made easier thanks to arguably the best pitch pitching staff in the state with multiple guys having big experience on the Varsity stage.  These arms are capable of completely shutting down opposing offenses which should allow some of the new bats working their way into the lineup a chance to get settled and start to create their own path at the Varsity level.  Getting those hitters comfortable in the box early and producing will be a main contributing factor on whether or not the Rams are able to repeat in 2023, but the Rams pitching staff will allow them to be in almost every single game throughout the year.

IMPACT PLAYERS

Jackson Farrell, LHP, 2024, Arkansas commit

Farrell has been a mainstay in the starting rotation since his freshman year and has put up video game numbers in both of his campaigns.  The left-hander has one of the best mixes in the state with the fastball working up into the upper 80's at times and pairs it with a big curveball and feel for a fading change.  There are a lot of arms that have the same type of stuff as Farrell but it is his ability to mix in all three pitches in any count for strikes that makes him stand out.  Hitters are constantly kept off balance with no ability to sit on any pitch and he can manipulate the curveball to both land in the zone when he needs or put in the chase zone to rack up strikeouts in a hurry.  Farrell has proven himself to be considered amongst the top of the Aces across the state and should be a tough out for opposing lineups on Monday nights.

Tyler Davis, RHP, 2024, OU commit

Davis burst onto the scene in 2022 working most of the year out of the bullpen for the Rams before transitioning to a starter's role down the stretch.  None of his starts were more important than the complete game effort in the State Championship game pitching the Rams to the Title.  Davis uses his mid to upper 80's fastball that has been in the low 90's to attack hitters and work ahead in the count before using his wipeout slider to finish them off.  Davis' slider is arguably one of the best pitches in the State with very tight spin and action that profiles already as a plus slider at the Power 5 level even as a Junior in High School.  The Rams will look for Davis to continue to expand his role on the staff as he transitions to a full-time starter's role.

Braydon Sanford, RHP, 2023, ORU commit

Sanford has one of the more projectable arms in the State and will look to build off of the successes he had towards the end of the Spring and into the Summer.  Sanford already works the fastball in the low 90's and started to show an improved breaking ball in the Summer that can make him a difficult matchup.  Sanford pitches with strong tilt from his 6-foo-4 and 185-pound frame and when he's working down in the zone can be very difficult to get a barrel on.  Sanford will look to expand his role on the staff in 2023 with the possibility of working both in the starting rotation in District games or providing some depth in the back-end of the bullpen.

Branden Floyd, INF/OF, 2023, Labette CC commit

Without Floyd's heroics in the post-season in 2022 it is entirely possible they don't even make it to the State Championship game.  Seemingly every time Floyd came up to bat in the State Tournament he was making a big impact with multiple clutch hits including a couple of homers that helped lead them into the Title game and earned him the PBR OK 6A State Tournament MVP.  Floyd has sneaky power from his smaller frame and shows the ability to line balls all over the field.  Defensively he has shown the ability to man the hot corner as well as be a plus defender in the outfield.  Coach Turner will be able to use Floyd all over the diamond if needed and he will be counted on to take over a more established role at the top of the lineup in 2023.

Baylor Corbin, C, 2023, Fort Scott CC commit

Corbin has been a mainstay behind the plate for the rams the past couple of years and will look to help lead the pitching staff from the crouch again in 2023.  Corbin does a good job of handling all the different arms the Rams have and has shown the ability to block and receive at a high level with advanced stuff from the pitching staff.  Corbin also has a knack for picking up big hits and driving in runs and the Rams will look for him to take on an expanded role in the offense in 2023 as the break in new faces.  Corbin is the team-leader in the locker room and his experience and leadership qualities will be heavily relied upon in 2023 as the Rams look for a repeat run at the Title.

Luke Williams, OF/LHP, 2024, OU commit

Williams joins the Rams in 2023 to help bolster both the lineup as well as provide them another talented left-handed arm on the mound.  Williams has shown in the past to work the fastball in the mid to upper 80's and has a true swing-and-miss breaking ball when he is able to command the zone.  Williams has an athletic delivery and quick hand speed that gives him the potential to continue to make gains on the mound and is one of the more projectable arms in the class.  He also provides an athletic swing and some juice from the left side of the plate helping the Rams fill some voids left off of last year's squad.  The OU commit will not only provide a punch to the Rams' lineup in 2023 but will expand the pitching staff even deeper giving them multiple options throughout the year.
