PBR OK Sandlot Scout Day Upgrade: Catcher Analysis

The third annual PBR Sandlot Scout Day was held at Broken Arrow HS on May 18th and at Oklahoma Christian on May 19th. This two day event feature most players in Sandlot organization. Covered here are only those players who chose to upgrade to a PBR profile at the event.

Hayden Barnes C / OF / Collinsville, OK / 2021

A 5-foot-5, 140-pound lean frame. Offensively, the compact, athletic left-handed catcher hits with good rhythm and timing, balanced setup with level line drive swing. Creates small separation with hand load and front foot lift to stride, barrel and hands load in strong launch position. Small tendency to load over back foot, weight gets on outer half of foot, still gets in strong hitting position at contact. Strong front side, extension out front through the baseball. In BP shows and all fields and flat approach, nearly all barrels, 83 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.09 60 with short easy strides, strong lower half. Defensively, lower half strength and flexibility in squat, staggered feet to allow for clearer path to catch, good catch and presentation out front with quiet glove. Single hand catch with quick feet and release, more arm strength to be developed but makes up with quick release and accurate throws. Transfer in center of body, ball inside back elbow, OT slot with velocity at 71 mph for showcase pop times of 2.06 - 2.16. 

Braden Blundell C / 1B / Owasso, OK / 2021

A 6-foot-2, 185-pound proportional frame. Offensively, physical  right-handed catcher hits from a balanced setup, fills out the right handed batters box with good presence. Easy, fluid actions in the box, small quiet load and stride to hit, leaks to the front side to swing, more length and power in the lower half to come. Hands stay neutral off the back shoulder, drives the baseball with some lift, middle of the field. In BP,  shows a middle to opposite field and flat approach with some barrels, 79 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.90 60. Defensively, sits low in primary stance to receive baseball with quiet glove, shows average hip flexibility. Secondary stance is tall to catch and throw, gets on balls of feet, stands tall to throw after catch. On throws down, feet have good direction to second base, single hand catch to throw with average transfer time and release, upright at release with short stride. High OT slot with some accuracy at 74 mph for showcase pop times of 2.15 - 2.19.

 

Chance Condit C / RHP / Salina, OK / 2021

A 6-foot-3, 220-pound lean frame. Offensively, the physical, right-handed hitting catcher shows good rhythm, hits from wide base with inward turn front leg to lift and stride. Short simple lift to stride, generates raw power and bat speed, over rotates and spins after contact. Steep attack angle, lifts baseballs pull side. Improved bat speed since last time, strong bat. In BP shows, shows a middle to pull approach with consistent lift, mostly barrels, 88 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.20 60, good speed and strides for frame, improved time. Defensively, average stance with some stiffness to receive, elbow tendency to get above glove to catch, small movement through the catch. Max effort catch and throw, works left with inward turn to throw, longer arm action and transfer with current arm strength. Leans and spins to finish release. Delivered accurate throws with some ASR at 81 mph for showcase pop times of 2.01 - 2.06. 

Lance Coronado C / 2B / Frederick, OK / 2021

A 5-foot-10, 190-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitting catcher uses a slightly crouched and closed stance, mixed a toe tap and lift to swing. Hands load below the armpit with barrel popping up, longer path to enter the hitting zone, some stiffness in the lower half. Middle to pull side approach, spins through front side to finish. In BP shows, shows a spray approach with some barrels, 69 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.40 60. Defensively, sits low in primary to receive, some bounce in catch. Taller in secondary with some stiffness in stance to catch and throw, glove drops prior to catch, works through the baseball to throw. Transfer is clean, arm works away from the body at a low arm slot, ball lacks carry to the base at 65 mph for showcase pop times of 2.23 - 2.35. 

Dylan Hammond C / 3B / Jenks, OK / 2021

A 6-foot-1, 170-pound projectable frame. Offensively, the left-handed hitting catcher has easy, fluid swing with good bat to ball skill, consistent barrel with middle approach, slight lift. Separates using small sliding leg lift, hands stay below back shoulder, neutral position with weight staying stacked over back side. Back knee and elbow stay connected, strong lower half throughout with good extension through the baseball. More pop and bat speed to come. In BP shows middle of the field and flat approach, mostly barrels, 81 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.31 60. Defensively, receives baseball far away from body with some movement, big setup and target to throw to. On throws down, quick transfer and release, transfers the baseball close to the body, bit tall but makes up with athletic arm action, ball jumps out of hand at 77 mph for showcase pop times of 1.99 - 2.09. 

Braden Harper C / SS / Noble, OK / 2022

A 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitting catcher hits from an athletic, slightly closed right handed stance with strong, positive movements to the baseball. Hands work slightly lifted off the back shoulder, barrel and hands work to strong launch position when front foot strides and lands. Positive attack angle, small dip in back shoulder. Bat speed and pop has increased, more to come. Swing has lift to all fields, mostly barrels, 84 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.19 60. Defensively, receives from athletic, low squat, shows flexibility and receives baseball clean. Tall to throw, quick feet with clean transfers, lacks arm strength and carry, ball came out at 69 mph for showcase pop times of 2.09 - 2.28. 

Hunter Kirby C / Berryhill, OK / 2020

A 5-foot-9, 190-pound frame. Offensively, the sturdy right-handed hitting catcher bats from a wide, balanced setup, slightly open. Average stride with weight shift to the front side, hands stay neutral off back shoulder. Hands push away from the body as it travels forward, causing some length to the swing. Long bat path with strength, drives baseball middle to pull side. In BP shows mostly barrels, 84 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.14 60. Defensively, sits low in primary stance with sturdy base, little sway to catch, high target with wrist roll to funnell.  On throws down, short quick strides, clean quick transfer with 1 hand catch, delivered baseball around the bag at 74 mph for showcase pop times of 1.94-2.00. 

Carson Lee C / RHP / Yukon , OK / 2021

A 6-foot, 185-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitting catcher hits from a slightly open setup, small leg lift to stride, lands heavy on front side. Barrel tip on the hand load, hands and barrel get to strong position at foot strike, small pause before hands launch to swing. Easy strength, generates bat speed through the hitting zone, round got better. In BP shows a pull approach with occasional lift, 84 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.30 60. Defensively, receives baseball well with strong setup and presentation, soft turn to catch. Catch and throw guy, delivers strong accurate throws on the bag with good direction. Front side and feet work together, uses lower half. On throws down, ball came out at 78 mph for showcase pop times of 1.93-2.00. 

Jackson Newman C / OF / Bixby, OK / 2020

A 6-foot-0, 165-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed catcher hits a knee knocking stance, tall upright, using leg lift to short stride to the baseball. Weight leaks forward through the swing, more power to be generated in lower half. Tall at contact and extension, long path to and through the baseball. Middle approach, small lift, 79 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.53 60. Defensively, receives from solid stance, average bend, glove works in front, some stiffness to catch. On throws to 2nd, slow tempo at catch and transfer, opportunity to cut pop time with better movement through the catch to 2nd base, good feet and direction to the base, accurate throws at 74 mph for showcase pop times of 2.12-2.23. 

Memphis Range C / RHP / Owasso, OK / 2021

A 6-foot-2, 185-pound lean frame. Offensively, the right-handed catcher hits from a wide, crouched stance, using a to tap to stride and hit. Weight shifts to front side with minimal separation in the swing, hands work away from body with one movement to the baseball. Glimpses of some strength and pop, more with refined movement patterns. In BP shows a gap to gap approach with consistent lift, some barrels, 83 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.57 60. Defensively, receives baseball from big stance with good bend for size, glove works heavy at catch with added movement.  On throws down, tall to throw, front side spin with short arm stroke. Feet work to second with short stride, lacks arm strength and carry through second base, ball had arm side fade at 70 mph for showcase pop times of 2.19-2.24. 

Reese Ratchford C / RHP / Sulphur , OK / 2022

A 6-foot-0, 180-pound lean, athletic frame. Offensively, advanced right-handed hitting catcher has present strength throughout, uses a wide but athletic stance to hit. Consistent barrels in BP with pull side lift and pop, has plus bat speed with ability to add more. Uses simple leg lift to stride and swing, lower half stays connected, strong at contact and extension. Middle of the order bat at the next level. In BP shows a gap to gap approach with occasional lift, 88 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.02 60. Defensively, receives baseball in athletic stance, catches baseball out front with good presentation. On throws down, aggressive and athletic to throw with minimal wasted movement, longer arm stroke with arm strength, ball jumps out of the hand. Feet work quick with good direction, accurate throws at 80 mph for showcase pop times of 1.94-2.20. #2 ranked player in 2022 class, high follow. 

Peyton Roberson C / 1B / Duncan, OK / 2022

A 5-foot-11, 200-pound mature build who hits from the left side. Roberson showed great rhythm pace in the box driving balls up the middle.Does a great job of staying behind the baseball. He’s got a chance to hit for power with a slight uphill swing that stays in the zone for a long time.His 90 mph exit was tied for 2nd on the day. Defensively, he showed off some quiet receiving skills.  On throws down,Roberson was efficient with his footwork and made consistent exchanges. His best pop time on the day was a 1.97 at 77mph. The recent Oklahoma commit is currently the #7 ranked player in OK for 2022.

Parker Whittle RHP / C / Regent Preparatory, OK / 2021

A 6-foot, 190-pound frame. Offensively, the physical right handed hitter generates good bat speed with strong lower half and frame, stays behind the baseball with good extension. Simple leg lift and hang to load, consistent barrels in BP, middle to oppo line drives with max effort swing. Lands slightly closed on front foot, rolls through to finish with small arm bar leading to the baseball, creates length at times. Physical right handed bat, chance to be middle of lineup bat. In BP shows and all fields approach with occasional lift, 86 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.65 60. Defensively, receives baseball in well balanced stance with strength, sits low with broad shoulders. Glove drops prior to catch, chance to be late with plus velo. Quiet, simple catch and throw actions, tall in secondary stance. On throws down, short arm stroke with small waggle, OT arm slot at 73 mph for showcase pop times of 2.07-2.14. 

Gage Williams C / OF / Sapulpa, OK / 2020

A 5-foot-10, 175-pound Wichita State commit, quick twitch catcher in the 2020 class. Offensively, the right-hander hits from a compact stance, using short stride and explosive lower half. Hands work well to and through the baseball, loud contact in BP with lots of barrels with lift to middle of the field. Not overmatched, simple, repetitive swing. In BP shows a gap to gap and mostly flat approach, 91 mph exit velo. Runs a 6.90 60. Defensively, receives baseball in low, strong athletic stance, glove works quiet to catch. Showed ability to block and recover the baseball, quick feet and acceleration. On throws down, shows quick transfer and feet, too quick at times, with spin to finish, ball delivered on left side of bag at 76 mph for showcase pop times of 1.95-2.04. 

Carson Williams C / 3B / Ponca City, OK / 2022

A 5-foot-9, 175-pound sturdy framed catcher, one of the top ranked catchers in class. Offensively, the right-handed hitter uses quiet setup with limited rhythm and movement to load, uses small foot lift to swing. Presets hands and lower half to swing, works through closed front foot to swing, strong lower half drives through the baseball. Hard contact with line drive approach, head and hands stay through baseball. In BP shows an all fields and flat approach, 87 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.25 60. Defensively, receives baseball with clean catch, glove works well out front, small quarter turn at catch. Feet work well with good direction to throw, creates positive momentum to second. Quick transfer of the baseball at center of body, ball delivered with some accuracy at 74 mph for showcase pop times of 1.94-2.03.
