Initial Oklahoma Class of 2028 Rankings

Bret Schwartz
Prep Baseball Oklahoma Scouting Director

Prep Baseball Oklahoma is excited to release our initial rankings for the 2028 class as we list our top 20 players. Our first swing at ranking the Freshman class will be limited to players that we have seen at events or in person at tournaments over the past couple of years. As we are able to see more players from the class, the rankings will continue to evolve with new players entering, players rising, and prospects continuing to separate themselves from peers with increased development and physical maturity. With any rankings, numerous factors come into play such as (but not limited to) current skillset, present athleticism and strength, projectability, and rawness of physical ability measured through various metrics and technology. Development is never linear and will look different for each player so fluctuation in the rankings is inevitable, but we as a staff utilize the current information available to us to be as thorough as possible. We will continue to gather information, for some at the Varsity level as early as this spring, and look forward to seeing the 2028 class much more at events, in the spring, and on the summer circuit.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at the Top 10 players with notes and video that put them at the top of the current class.

THE TOP TEN

Baylor Shaw C / 3B / Enid, OK / 2028

Shaw will open our initial rankings for the 2028 class as the number one ranked prospect in a talent rich group. Standing at 6’1” and 150-pounds, Shaw is a well rounded backstop that has room to continue growing and maturing into his lean frame. Offensively, the right handed hitter utilizes a mature approach to the middle of the field, and has shown the ability to work gap to gap with extra base hits. Defensively, Shaw really sets himself apart from many with his athleticism from the catching position. Above average feet and quickness along with consistent transfers have led to pop times as low as 1.94. Shaw has high end potential that make him an exciting follow in the coming years.

Carter Cole OF / LHP / Sulphur, OK / 2028

Cole checks in at number two on our initial rankings as the top two-way prospect to date. On the mound, he works his fastball into the low 80s with good ride and above average spin. He has also showcased an ability to command both a curveball and changeup to land both in the zone for strikes. The true three-pitch mix makes Cole an exciting player as a left handed pitcher alone, but his work in the outfield have only propelled his upside further. As a position player, the outfielder has long levers that should continue leading to more extra base hits with added strength and physical maturity. Presently, he has  reached a max exit velocity of 90.9 mph but promises much more to come.

Aiden Hendren RHP / 3B / Lincoln Christian, OK / 2028

Hendren checks in as the number three prospect on our initial 2028 rankings. Standing at a physical 6’0” and 208-pounds, he has already worked his fastball up to 86 mph with ride and comfort pitching at the top of the zone. He will continue to develop secondary pitches and with time could see big jumps with pitchability and swing and miss. Offensively, the power hitting corner infielder has shown the ability to be a middle of the order presence. The two-way force will be a name to know as he continues developing.

Cruz Garrett SS / RHP / Allen, OK / 2028

Cruz Garrett checks in at number four in our initial rankings installment as one of the younger players listed having recently turned 15. At 5’10” and 155-pounds, the wiry frame still leaves room to add future strength but presently plays with pace and fluidity beyond his years. As he continues to physically mature and develop, the metrics will soon follow with foot speed, bat speed, and exit velocity. On the mound, Garrett showcases feel and command with a fastball sitting in the low 80s as well as an advanced spin curveball. He is an exciting prospect that can be a difference maker in multiple facets of the game.

Ryker McCully OF / RHP / Lindsay, OK / 2028

McCully comes in at five in our initial 2028 rankings with some of the best athleticism in the class. To date, he has clocked the fastest 60 in the class throughout the state at 6.94 seconds and shown the arm strength that would allow him to play any of the three outfield spots effectively. He is the type of spark plug that we anticipate to see at the top of lineups for years to come with game-changing ability both offensively and defensively. On the mound, he currently works in the low 80s and uses his athleticism to fill up the zone. An exciting prospect, McCully will be a name to know in the coming years.

Jackson Mays SS / RHP / Washington, OK / 2028

Mays checks in at six in our initial rankings for the 2028s. To this point, Mays has shown to be an advanced defender from a premium position at shortstop and has showcased the arm strength to stick on the left side as he has been up to 83 mph across the infield. A combination of advanced awareness and quickness in his feet playing with pace, but calm and poised with comfort receiving the baseball. Offensively, Mays will continue to progress with physical development as mechanics and swing outpace the current metrics. He will continue to be a high follow prospect in the middle of the infield.

Cooper Crosswhite OF / RHP / Enid, OK / 2028

Crosswhite checks in at seven in the first installment of our 2028 rankings. The Enid product utilizes present strength and athleticism to put him near the top of numerous lists across the class with a 7.12 60, a 19.6 mph top speed, and 91.9 mph exit velocity. Offensively, he has shown the ability to work through the middle of the field and is in the hitting zone for an extended period of time. With time and further physical development, his gap to gap line drive approach could progress into more extra base hits. Defensively, the accurate thrower from the outfield could cover all three spots with the athletic ability and arm to be an above average defender.

Connor Arant 3B / RHP / Jenks, OK / 2028

Arant is one of the most physically imposing players in the 2028 class standing at 6’4” and 215-pounds. The two-way prospect works as both a corner infielder and right handed pitcher with his fastball reaching 86 mph and an average of 2100 RPMs. On the mound, he has shown feel for multiple pitches including both a slider and curveball. Offensively, Arant has shown the ability to be a middle of the order presence in the middle of a lineup with power to the alleys and feel for elevating to the pull side. Arant will be a name to follow with present strength and physicality that could get him on the field for Jenks sooner rather than later.

Cal Gore 3B / 1B / Enid, OK / 2028

Core comes in at nine in our initial ranks displaying a strong presence both in the box and the middle of the infield from the shortstop position. Offensively, an advanced approach allows him to utilize the entire field as he has already shown to be near the top of the state in ability to stay in the hitting zone for an extended period. To date, Gore has a max exit velocity of 101.2 mph and combined with his approach makes his development as a middle of the order presence all the more exciting. Defensively, he has shown versatility that will allow him to play all over the infield, but continue to play on the left side working 82 mph across. Gore will be a part of talented Enid teams for the next few years and a fun player to follow.

Mason Mayhew SS / RHP / Deer Creek, OK / 2028

Mayhew comes in at ten with our first installment of the 2028 class rankings as a true shortstop. A lean frame at 5’11” and 165-pounds, Mayhew already showcases advanced actions and feel from a premium defensive position as well as the arm strength to stick on the left side. The Deer Creek product uses his long levers to his advantage offensively as well with a feel for leveraging balls pull side and with future strength will come more power and extra base hits as well. Mayhew has also shown upside on the mound with both a high carry fastball and high spin slider. An exciting prospect, we anticipate Mayhew to continue developing in all facets as a must-see player in the coming years.
