18U Ontario Blue Jays vs Gettysburg College - 3.13.18

The 18u Ontario Blue Jays offense took an early lead and didn’t look back as Northwest Florida State College commit Jacob Kush was sharp in his first appearance of the year striking out 8 in five innings of work. He was in control the entire afternoon, locating his fastball early in the count and mixing in both slider and a curveball, along with a changeup. He did run into some trouble in the fourth as there were a couple walks he needed to work around but overall was impressive for his first outing in the middle of March.

OBJ struck early as an RBI triple off Noah Naylor’s bat in the first game them a lead they would never relinquish. Naylor drove the ball halfway up the batter's eye dead centre and I wasn’t sure how it was not called a home run. He also walked, laced a line drive single into right field and struck out in his remaining at-bats.

Jake Ervin continued to show his power as the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M commit absolutely demolished a ball into the trees into left-field. It was a two run shot and an immediate no doubter off the bat. Second day in a row where he has got into one and the only reason he didn’t get a four bagger on Monday was thanks to the wind.

Other hits from Thomas Grilli, Ryan Johnston, Alex Seelman, TJ Schofield-Sam and David Mendham all added to the 9 runs that OBJ put as they needed everyone as Gettysburg made a late push and had two runners on down 9-7 in the last. Rarely used Ryan Johnston came in and recorded the final outs in the 7th to nail down the win.

That’s it for our coverage in Vero Beach, we now make our way to St. Petersburg for the remainder of our trip.
