With the New Year Open, it is always an exciting event as there is many fresh faces looking to get a jump on 2019 season, as well returnees that have bulked up, matured, and added and improved parts to their game over the past 4+ months.

This year was no different as with close to 90 players in attendance, there was some performers who looked to be in mid-summer shape, swings were stronger and quicker on numerous players and some new names made a strong first impression on myself, and our PBR Ontario staff.

We take a quick look at a few of the players that caught our attention early on, with more news and notes to come from the New Year Open.

THE BATS

Blake Jacklin OF / SS / Elmira District, ON / 2020

Report: Jacklin could be all over this list and with our top performers, he’s in multiple categories. The left-handed hitter was impressive in many facets of the day, and during BP showed a quick, compact stroke. Hands worked well to contact with bat speed through the zone, line drives worked back up the middle with extension and finish to his swing and drove balls that would carry to the back of the cage. There is some present strength and really liked the way ball came off his bat.
