Ontario Insider: 2021 Prospects On The Horizon

It didn’t take too long into 2018 to catch a glimpse of some of the more talented 2021 prospects in the province. While the 2020 class is starting to take shape with names of the calibre of Stephen Kinal of the Ontario Blue Jays, Graham MacNeil of the Toronto Mets, Mathew Duffy of the Great Lake Canadians, and Bryce Arnold of the Fieldhouse Pirates, the next wave of young baseball players on the horizon are eager to breakout and make a name for themselves this summer.

Most notably, London Badgers outfielder Brendan Mahood, Fieldhouse Pirates outfielder Owen Caissie and right-handed pitcher Connor Campbell.

Brendan Mahood RHP / OF / Catholic Central, ON / 2021 Mahood is yet another impressive young talent out of Mike Lumley’s Badgers system. The outfielder has a great frame and will continue to add size and muscle as he matures. What already is evident is his projectable raw pop and strong swing from the left side, with a swing eerily familiar to that of Great Lake Canadians 2019 classman Owen Diodati.

Owen Caissie OF / Sir Ernest MacMillan, ON / 2021 Meanwhile, Caissie has a long-limbed and projectable build and shows the raw tools at the plate that can translate into future gap-to-gap pop. His hands work well, the swing stays controlled for the most part with great extension, and has very good barrel awareness for his age, which allowed him to rip some baseballs during the New Year’s Open showcase in Burlington.

Connor Campbell RHP / OF / Garth Webb, ON / 2021 On the mound, Connor Campbell is a young Fieldhouse arm to keep a close eye on moving forward. Campbell, a 6-foot-1 right-hander has a loose arm and a projectable, long frame with room to fill out as he continues to develop. The ball comes out of the hand cleanly from an easy delivery, with late sinking arm-side action on his fastball that currently tops out at 81. Campbell showed a feel for his secondary stuff, which still needs more work, but nevertheless an arm to watch out for moving forward.

As the summer months quickly approach, it will definitely be exciting to see what the next wave of talent can do from the 2021 class.
