2022 Watch List 1.0

Dylan Oborne 3B / RHP / Westmount C.I., ON / 2022

Report: Oborne ended the summer with several good showing against high-level competition and solidified himself as one of the top two-way players in this class. The size and physicality plays on both sides of the ball for the 6-foot-2, 200-pound third baseman from the Ontario Terriers. Oborne is consistently on-time at the plate and the power plays to the pull-side for the right-handed hitter. He was up to 87 mph on the mound in September and attacked hitters with an impressive fastball-curveball combination. He’s a true two-way player who can impact a game, either in the box or on the mound, and it will be interesting to see which area of his game takes the first leap development wise.

Matthew Dubrick OF / 2B / St. Michael's College School, ON / 2022

Report: Dubrick is a left-handed hitting outfielder who moves with life and energy and a swing that shows quickness through the zone with a fairly level path and finish at the end. He gets the bat head started and there is looseness in the hands while working off his backside. There is athleticism there with a 7.19 sixty time on a slow track and profiles more as a CF or LF with the arm at the moment. The bat speed, swing and pulse grab your attention with Dubrick.

Zachary Christie 1B / RHP / Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School, ON / 2022

Report: Christie really transformed his body this year and the 2022 grad is someone who has the present power to leave any yard as the display he put on in Welland two years ago was legendary. He is controlled in the box and there is hand eye to work with. In August he hit balls hard but had a tougher time getting them in the air. Once he learns his swing more and gets the reps and at-bats needed, you're going to buy the bat and the person here.

Tucker Delaney OF / 2B / Brooklin , ON / 2022

Report: Delaney is someone who is going to have his best years in front of him as the frame and body look to gain size and strength. He ran well on a slow track with a 7.11 and as he matures we can see that number getting better. At times he'll get to big at the plate, Delaney is at his best when he keeps it simple and contact, line drive oriented. An adequate defender, the weight room will be a big factor in the development path Delaney takes.

Kyle Magdic 1B / 3B / Blessed Trinity, ON / 2022

Report: Another first baseman with strength on this list, Kyle Magdic is a sleeper in this class with some serious offensive potential. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound right-handed hitter is balanced in the box with bat speed through the zone and an explosive lower-half. The power projects for Magdic and there’s feel for the barrel and for the hit tool. The glove is behind the bat right now but he’s no slouch at first base either as the footwork and arm strength can play at third base as well. After a lack of views this summer due to COVID-19, it will be interesting to see where Magdic’s development is at come springtime.

Jax Nyberg LHP / OF / Dennis O'Connor Catholic SS , ON / 2022

Report: Nyberg walked into Playball Academy at last year’s Canadian College Showcase and caught our attention before even stepping on the mound with the projectable, 6-foot-4, 185-pound frame. The Pickering Prospects left-hander works from a ¾ arm slot and the fastball sat 77-80 throughout the summer, a number we expect to rise as he fills out. The arm slot can wander at times although he’s typically consistent throwing his fastball for strikes. The curveball has shape and depth in the 65-68 mph range and could become a put-away pitch with more consistent bite. Adding strength and tapping into some additional velocity will be a big part of his development on the mound going forward.

Daniel Howat 1B / LHP / Assumption, ON / 2022

Report: Howat’s size and physicality has stood out at every event we’ve seen him and the offensive upside in his bat is something to keep an eye on. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound first baseman is able to drive the ball to all fields with authority and his 95 mph exit velocity from the right-side was tops on Day Two of the Future Games Trials. He has arm strength on the infield but the profile fits first base and with some work on his mobility, could become a solid defender at the position. With the raw strength he possesses, there’s potential on the mound as well where his fastball sits 82-83 and some development on a secondary pitch will add value to that side of his game.
